Knowlesville Loses Well Known Lady
Mrs. Arthur K. Avery, 80 Had Lived in Community 56 Years
Many will regret to learn of the death of Mrs. Arthur K. Avery of Knowlesville, Carleton County, on January 24, 1946. Mrs. Avery, nee Alice Ada Day, was born in Chipman, N.B. on April 25, 1866. She moved with her family to Gull River, Minnesota in 1881, was married there in 1888 and in 1890 moved to Knowlesville, where she resided until her recent death. In this time she has become widely known and respected in the community, having taken an active part in community and church work. She was a member of the United Church of Canada. The funeral, at the Knowlesville Church, and conducted by the Rev. William C. Amey, was well attended. The hymns sung were "Sunrise", a solo by Lorne Britton, "Good Night and Good Morning", "Rock of Ages", and "In the Sweet Bye and Bye", by the quartette consisting of Lorne Britton and son, Thomas Patrick and Richard Bramley. The organist was Mrs. Claude Manuel. Pallbearers were grandsons; Robert Avery, Blair Avery, John Avery, Ronald Avery, Garnet Manuel and Gerald Manuel. Her passing leaves to mourn her husband, Arthur K. Avery; four sons, King, at home; Alton in Knowlesville; Cecil, New York; and Earle, Woodstock; three daughters, Mrs. Clarence Manuel, Knowlesville; Mrs. Walter Clyde, Burnt Land Brook, N.B.; and Mrs. M. McGinn, New York; twenty-two grandchildren and four great grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Sarah Cobb and Mrs. Mark DeLong of Vallejo, Calif.; and two brothers, Bedford and Chipman Day of San Francisco. There were many beautiful floral tributes. Interment was in the Forest Hill Cemetery.

Sharon Elaine Wright of Hartland passed away on Saturday, July 10, 2021 at the Upper River Valley Hospital in Waterville. She was born November 22, 1947, and was the daughter of the late Alton and Mary Avery. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her son, Michael Wright and brother, Alton Avery.

Sharon is survived by her children, Basil of Bath, Mary of Fredericton, Tammy of Plaster Rock; sisters, Colleen Avery of Knowlesville, Yvonne Sarchfield of Wakefield; and her two best friends, her cat Cole, and Jim Patterson.

Alton Avery of East Coldstream passed away on Wednesday, July 7, 2010 at the Upper River Valley Hospital in Waterville, Alton was born January 20, 1949 and was the son of the late Alton and Mary (Clark) Avery.

Alton is survived by his wife Valerie Avery of East Coldstream; children, Craig (Cynthia) Avery of Woodstock, Melissa (Murray McLaughlin) Avery of Newburg; grandchildren, Kathryn Avery, Sebastian Avery, Julieanne Avery; sisters, Yvonne (Ercell) Sarchfield of Wakefield, Sharon Wright of Howard Brook, Coleen Avery of Knowlesville; mother-in-law, Charlotte Cragg of Keswick, Ontario.

Robert Murray Avery, 95, of Woodstock NB passed away on Saturday, December 6, 2014 at the Carleton Manor Nursing Woodstock NB. Robert was born in Woodstock NB on October 14, 1919 son of the late Earle and Elizabeth (Kinney) Avery.
Robert is survived by his son; John, granddaughter; Angela, two great grandchildren, sister in law, Leona, nieces, nephews and cousins.
Besides his parents; Robert was predeceased by his wife, Marguerite and a brother, Blair.
Visitation will be held at The Carleton Funeral Home & Crematorium 337 Lockhart Mill Road Jacksonville on Saturday, December 13 from 1 PM to 3 PM. By request there will be no funeral service. Interment will be held in the Woodstock Rural Cemetery at a later date.

Gerald Lloyd Manuel of Knowlesville departed this life at Riverview Manor in Bath, N B.He was born on a farm in Knowlesville and spent almost his entire life on a farm in Knowlesville. He married Doris Hawkes in 1943 and together they farmed until he had a stroke.He was cared for at home for a few years and then went to Riverview Manor.As well as farming,he also hired out with his truck. There were three brothers and five sisters in his family. Garnet (Eleanor Castigan), Hilton (Kay) (1917-1985) and Gerald and Marjorie (Fon) Mean,(1922-1947),Sydney (Gerald)Derrah, Maureen (Richard)Smith, Alice(William)Burnham, and Roma(James)Hatheway. He was admired for his fine Belgian horses.

Sydney was 89 when she passed away at the Upper River Valley Hospital in Waterville on August 18, 2017.

She was born at Knowlesville on March 31, 1928, the daughter of the late Clarence Manuel and Hester Avery. She married Gerald Derrah of Mount Pleasant on July 31, 1948. They had three daughters Brenda Patricia (now deceased), Judy (Jack) MacQuarrie of Moncton and Carolyn (Randy) Derrah-Murphy of Fall River, N.S.; three sons, Brian of Ottawa, Chris (Norma) of Green Mountain, Richard (Sue-Ellen) of Mount Pleasant; ten grandchildren, Jason (Staci), Matthew (Elizabeth), Jordan, Devan (Caitlin), Julie (Nevin) Lewis and Lauren Derrah, Jonathan MacQuarrie and Amy (Ralph) Paugh, and Emily and Rachael Murphy; six great grandchildren, Jadon, Samuel, Madelyn, Jillian Sydney and Isaiah Derrah and Adam MacQuarrie. She has three brothers now deceased, Garnet of Woodstock, Gerald of Knowlesville and Hilton of Bristol and two sisters, Marjorie Mean and Roma Hathaway. She is survived by two sisters, Maureen Smith of Oakville and Alice Burnham of Florenceville.

She graduated from Bath High School in 1944 and the Provincial Normal School in Fredericton in 1945 where she met life-long friends. In later years she studied at the University of New Brunswick. She taught in Bannon and Knowlesville and was a supply teacher in Florenceville. She maintained a lifelong interest in church and community life in Knowlesville. She was a wife, mother and homemaker who delighted in her family and their achievements. She was an avid reader, took great pleasure in her flower garden and in bird watching, always loving to see humming birds.

She was a member of the Mount Pleasant United Baptist Church where she served as a Sunday School teacher and secretary-treasurer of the Sunday School, was active in the Women’s Missionary Society both in Gordonsville and Mount Pleasant, and always looked forward to fall retreats at Living Waters in Danforth, Maine. She was active in the Carleton County Retired Teacher’s Teacher’s Association, with her husband was active in Home and School and an ardent supporter of the Conservative Party of Canada, and the Progressive Conservative Party of New Brunswick. She was keenly interested in the Manuel family history and the history of Knowlesville. She helped organize Manuel family reunions.

In retirement she travelled with her husband to Australia, New Zealand, Hawaii, Florida and Alaska and throughout Canada but loved Carleton County. Nothing gave her more pleasure than a drive to Knowlesville or lunch at Grama’s Bakeshop or Murray’s.

Visitation will be held on Monday, August 21, 2017 at the Briton Funeral Home, 2 High Street, Hartland from 5 to 8 p.m. The funeral service will be on Tuesday the 22nd at 2:00 p.m. from the Mount Pleasant United Baptist Church with Pastor Peter Culberson officiating. Interment will be in the Mount Pleasant Cemetery. The unexpected passing of Michael Oscar Wright of Fredericton, NB occurred on August 9, 2020. Born on December 2, 1972 in Newmarket, Ontario, he was the son of the late Leslie Wright and Sharon (Avery) Wright.

He leaves behind his most precious baby girl, Peanut (Michaela Grace Wright) and his fur grandbabies, Truffles and Misfit; sisters, Mary (Steve) Milberry and Tammy (Jeff) Jenkins; brother, Basil Wright; two nephews, Tyler Jenkins and Bradley (Sheryl) Jenkins; favourite niece, Abby Wright; his favourite little, little buddy Clayton (great nephew). Predeceased by his father, Leslie; paternal grandmother, Alevia Wright; maternal grandmother, Mary Avery; maternal grandfather, Alton Avery.

Besides being around his family, he enjoyed fishing, hunting and cheering for the Boston Bruins and Boston Red Sox, and teasing the “Habs” fans. He would be the first to help anyone in need and will be missed by all.
