THE PEARSON FAMILY

Only a relatively small number of farms in the Glassville area have remained in the hands of the same family from earliest settler to the present day. One is the Pearson farm - the first south of the village, now owned by Murray Pearson.

By 1860 or at latest 1861, Richard D. Pearson, age 20, and his brother James A., 16, were in Glassville and probably living at first with the John Simpson family. Four hundred acres were granted to the Pearsons - Lot 26 to Richard's father Joseph (the original and present homestead Lot 26 to Richard, the farm later owned by the Lyons family Lot 30 to Richard's brother John, the farm immediately next to the village including the present church end cemetery area, and Lot 25, the farm on the west side of the road, later owned by Wesley McIntosh.

Joseph and his wife Mary had three sons in addition to Richard and James: John (1843), Joseph (1851), William (1853) and two daughters, Mary (1839) and Charlotte (1052). All seven children were born in Kings County, near Sussex.

Joseph was born in 1806 in Wigton, England near Carlisle. He came to New Brunswick in 1825 with his father John (1765), mother Jane Harden (1767), brother William and uncle Thomas. They settled in Pearsonville, a small community in the Kierstead Mountain area, near Sussex. Mary McDiarmid was born in Scotland in 1813 and also came out to Kings County with her family. Joseph and Mary were married in Sussex in 1638.

One of Mary's sisters, Jane, married John Simpson, who was born in Scotland in 1823 and came to Upham, Kings County in 1829 with his family.

About 1860, when word circulated throughout New Brunswick about the new settlement in Carleton County, the Pearsons, Simpson's and McDiarmid's decided to move on. It is not known who initiated the move; perhaps someone visited the area while the survey was in progress. Possibly someone in the families knew the Farley's, who were already living in Esdraelon. If not, the Pearson boys got to know them well later - both Richard and John married Farley girls.

John Simpson's brother James was granted Lot #24, the present Murray McIntosh farm, and John was granted Lot #22, the farm immediately south, later the Nixon farm. The McDiarmid's settled in the East Glassville range near the Glassville-Juniper road.

Mary, the eldest Pearson daughter, died at childbirth on December 25, 1875 leaving four children. Two of them, Archibald A. Pearson and McKay Warwick Mann, were given a home with their grandparents, uncle William and aunt Charlotte. Two daughters remained with their father Richard
Mann.

The eldest son, Richard, did not remain long in Glassville. He sold his farm in 1865 to William Lyon, a blacksmith who came from Banffshire, Scotland. Richard married Ellen Farley of Esdraelon, as mentioned. He owned and operated a mill at Beechwood, then later in Ferndale and Fortuna in California. Richard and Ellen had six daughters; the youngest born in California.

John (1843-1885) was the owner of the farm nearest the village, and donated the land for the first church and cemetery. He was still living at home in 1871 but married Matilda Fancy (1850-1926) not long after. After John's death, Matilda, with her son Sheppard, moved to California to be with her sister.

James (1845-1913), who at fifteen or sixteen had come to Glassville with his brother to start the family relocation process, may not have lived long in Glassville. He married Charlotte Augusta and took up farming in Upper Brighton. They had nine children, most of whom remained in Carleton County. One daughter, Mary, moved to Detroit.

Joseph Jr. (1851-1926) still living at home in 1871 and then twenty, married Matilda Jones soon after. They lived in Saint John and Beechwood where he ran a general store and may have been associated with his brother Richard in a lumbering business. After a period in California with Richard, he settled in Upper Brighton where he farmed and was active in local politics. Joseph and Matilda had two sons, Murray (1872) and Frank (1878), both of whom settled in Houlton, Maine.

Joseph Sr. died in 1881 at age 75. At that time the household consisted of his widow Mary, then 60, son William, 28, as head of the household, daughter Charlotte, 29, and grandsons Archibald Pearson and McKay Mann. Tragedy struck five years later when William was severely injured in a woods accident and died of his injuries at age 33.

William willed the family homestead to Charlotte and their nephew McKay Warwick Mann, and seventy-five acres, the remaining paaart of John's original farm next to the cemetery, to nephew Archibald. This was conditional upon Charlotte and Archibald caring for his mother, and Archibald being head of the household until Warwick (as Richard called him) became of age. Mother Mary died in the following year, 1887, at age 74.

By 1891, Archibald had married Mary Lamont and in 1892 Charlotte married Peter Millie. McKay, who had been with his aunt from infancy, moved to the Millie household and spent the rest of his life with her and her son John Peter. On Charlotte's marriage, the homestead and farm passed to Archibald. Charlotte lived on the Millie farm with her son until her death in 1935. Her daughter Isa married James Scott and they, with their daughter Charlotte Millie Scott., lived just a few farms south.

Archie and Mary had three children. Harry married Elizabeth (Lizzie) McIntosh and lived in Bath for most of his life. Mary (Mamie) married William McIntosh and lived for many years in Kenneth before moving to Glassville and the farm directly across the road from the old homestead. This is the property now owned by their daughter Elsie. Wilfred, the youngest, married Jean Elliott and lived the rest of his life on the homestead, passing away in 1973. Their son Murray, the present owner is therefore the fifth generation of the family to live and farm on the land first granted to the Pearsons in 1861.

Biggar Ridge: In Aberdeen Parish located between the communities of Argle and Juniper originally the eastern part of the town of Foreston. The first settler in East Foreston was William Alfred Biggar, who arrived in 1870 from Smith Creek, Kings County, with his wife, the former Susan Harrington, and son. Elsie Elizabeth McIntosh of Glassville passed away on Wednesday, July 29, 2015 at the Mount Haven Special Care Home in Glassville. She was born July 8, 1930 and was the daughter of the late William and Mary McIntosh. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her sister, Mildred Fraser, and her brother-in-law, Angus Fraser.

Elsie was a school teacher for the Province of New Brunswick for 35 years, 28 of those years being at the Hartland High School. Elsie was also involved in many organizations; the Girl Guides, The Naturalist Club of New Brunswick, The Canadian Nature Federation, the UCW both in Glassville and Hartland, and the I.O.D.E.

Elsie is survived by her brother Gerald (Sandra) McIntosh; sister. Mary (Paul) Campbell; nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours will be held on Friday, July 31st from 12 to 2 p.m. followed by the funeral service at 2:00 p.m. from the L.R. Giberson Funeral Chapel with Stephen Brown officiating. At the Upper River Valley Hospital on Monday, June 1, 2009 Murray Alvin Pearson passed away at the age of 71. Born in Glassville on October 11, 1937, he was the son of the late Wilfrid and Jean (Elliott) Pearson and husband of the late Janet Pearson.
Murray is survived by his friend and companion Shirley Fox of Woodstock, 2 children, Brent (Kim) of Glassville and Brenda (Roger) McQuade of Medford, 6 grandchildren, Dallas, Jackson and Emma Pearson, Teena, Deana and Jada McQuade, 1 sister Irene (Hazen) Perkins of Bristol and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was predeceased by his parents, wife, Janet and 2 sisters, Elva Henderson and Margaret Stoddard.
Visitation will be held at L.R. Giberson Funeral Directors, 207 Burnham Rd. Florenceville on Tuesday, June 2, 2009 from 2-4 and 7-9 pm. The death of Mary Irene Perkins of Bristol occurred on Friday, April 6, 2012 at the Upper River Valley Hospital, Waterville. Irene was born in Glassville on November 23, 1933 and was the daughter of the late Wilfred and Jean (Elliott) Pearson. She was also predeceased by 2 sisters, Alva Henderson and Margaret Stoddard and one brother, Murray Pearson (Janet).
Irene is survived by her loving husband of 60 years, Hazen; 2 children, Ricky Perkins (Debbie) and Ashley Perkins; 1 grand daughter, Melissa Kilcollins (Mike); 1 great grand daughter, Kailee; special niece, Cathy Bither and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Irene was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

IRVINE E. MILLIE, CPA, FCA
Born April 24, 1924 in Stanley, NB to John Millie and Beatrice Foreman, eldest brother of Grace, Gwen, Ena, Anne, Don, Sheila, Larry, Ted and Brenda, Irv died January 25, 2018 in Toronto. Raised in Glassville, NB, Irv married his childhood sweetheart, Edna Martin, in 1949. Irv achieved the Gold medal in New Brunswick and the Bronze in Canada in the Chartered Accountants national exams, and went on to teach at Dalhousie University. He subsequently joined KPMG predecessor firm Peat Marwick Mitchell as a partner, travelling across Canada to recruit a generation of future CPAs. A longtime resident of Don Mills (Toronto), Irv and Edna and their three daughters spent many happy days at Donalda Club, where Irv was a keen golfer and curler. Irv and Edna lived in London, Ontario for several years, returning recently to Don Mills. Irv is survived by Edna; their daughters, Marilyn, Joanne and Lori; 5 grandchildren; and a great granddaughter. A private family cremation has taken place. A celebration of Irv's life will be held Saturday, February 3 at Donalda Club, 12 Bushbury Drive, North York at 1 p.m.

Grace Edna Demmings of Perth-Andover passed away unexpectedly at Hotel Dieu St. Joseph Hospital on October 5, 2014. Grace was born in Glassville, NB on December 31, 1926. She was the daughter of the late John and Beatrice (Foreman) Millie. Gweneth Millie Gray, 87, formerly of Mill Road, North Haven passed away peacefully on Tuesday, December 1, 2015 at the Connecticut Hospice, Branford with her family by her side. She was the wife of the late Eugene A. Gray. Gwen was born in Glassville, New Brunswick, Canada on November 14, 1928; daughter of the late John P. and Beatrice Foreman Millie; graduated Normal School and was a teacher in a one room school house in New Brunswick. She had worked for Eyelet Speciality. Gwen was a devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and her family was her greatest enjoyment. Mother of Paula Watson VanSingel (David), Barbara Anne Gray, Linda Gray Watson (Brian), Kevin E. Gray (Cathy) and the late John R. Gray. The funeral services for Donald Allen Millie were held in the Glassville United Church. Rev. Hilda of Glassville and Rev. Garth Casley, Florenceville, officiated.He was the son of Beatrice (Foreman) and the late John Peter Millie of Bath and Woodstock.

A 25-year veteran of the Canadian Armed Forces, he served in Summerside, P.E.I.; Edmonton, Alberta; Trenton, Ontario; Camp Borden, Ont.; Base Uplands, Ottawa, Ont.; No. 2 Fighters Wing; Grostenquin, France. He retired Sept. 1982 to come home to Fredericton where he bought a taxi and drove for Northside. To his many friends he was known as Car 21.

A prayer service was held at York Funeral Home, Fredericton, Rev. Gil Todd officiated. From Fredericton the funeral procession moved to Glassville. After the service in the church, a military honor guard formed an archway and carried the flag draped coffin through to its final resting place. The military service was carried out by 403 Sqn. (air element) CFB Gagetown.

He was a native of Glassville. He took his mechanic training at Lawson Motors in 1955-1956 in Fredericton before joining the RCAF. He is survived by his wife Shirley Jean Millie, one daughter, Mona Lisa Cameron, Summerside, P.E.I.; three sons, Rodney, John Peter, Eddy, all living at home, his mother, three brothers, Irvine, Toronto, Ont.; Larry, Woodstock; Ted, Saint John; sisters Grace Demmings, Aroostook; Gwen Gray, Connecticut; Ena Hicks, Winnipeg; Ann Schure, St. Paul, Minn.; Sheila Simmonds, Windsor; Brenda Jardine, Nackawic.

Brenda Jardine 1949-2018 The family of Brenda (Millie) Jardine of Nackawic, NB, sadly announce her peaceful passing on August 17, 2018 at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital in Fredericton, NB. Brenda, a devoted and loving wife, mother and grandmother, passed away as she had lived, quietly and privately in the presence of her husband and children. Brenda was born in Bath, NB on October 3, 1949, the tenth child of John and Beatrice (Foreman) Millie. She attended school in Bath, NB, graduating from Bath Regional High School, before going on to Teacher’s College in 1967. She married Darryl Jardine of Newcastle, NB in 1970. Brenda was passionate about her family - it was always the central focus of her life and she loved nothing more than having everybody together for one of her signature meals. In addition to her husband and children, her five grandchildren were her great loves. They will surely miss her ‘Grandma rolls’, chocolate chip cookies, story times, sleep overs and having her sing them songs. They all loved their grandma dearly, she was a very special presence in all of their lives. She is survived by her husband of 47 years, Darryl Jardine; her children, Jeffrey (Natalie) of Fredericton, NB, Tim (Katherine) of Rothesay, NB and Shannon (Nick) of Beechville, NS; five grandchildren, Ryan, Halle, Mallory, Thomas and Meghan; two sisters, Ena and Anne and brothers Larry (Carol) and Ted (Dot). Brenda was predeceased by her parents, her brothers, Irvine and Don and sisters Grace, Gwen and Sheila. Brenda had superior strength and sense of conviction, qualities that she brought to her teaching career that spanned over 35 years. Her career focused on elementary school and junior high school students, teaching in Bath, Saint John, Nackawic, Millville, Canterbury and Keswick Valley; it was hard for her to go anywhere in southwestern New Brunswick without running into somebody she taught. She also worked as a literary supervisor at School District 28 in Woodstock. Brenda retired from teaching in 2004 but remained on hand to supply teach for several years. She was a natural teacher, meeting the needs of all the children she taught. Her students loved her and affectionately called her ‘Mrs. J’. Brenda was always cognizant of those less fortunate and provided many pairs of sneakers, winter jackets and meals for children in need; she always had a spot for children. Additionally, Brenda was a mentor to many fledging teachers. She would naturally take them under her wing and support and guide them through their early teaching years in the classroom. Brenda was a member of the Kirk United Church in Nackawic, NB where she taught Sunday School and prepared and served countless meals for Senior Dinner day. Although there will be no visitation, friends are welcome to attend a funeral service to be held at Kirk United Church, 29 Landegger Drive, Nackawic, NB on Tuesday, August 21, 2018 at 2 pm with Alice Finnamore officiating. A reception will follow in the church hall. Pallbearers will be Ruth Giberson, Anne Wilson, Sally Richards, Melanie Dingee and Carol Millie. It is with heavy hearts that we announce the death of Ashley E. Perkins, of Centreville, NB. Born on September 3, 1965 to the late Hazen and M. Irene Perkins. Ashley was predeceased by her most loving Canine Companion, Emma.

DEMMINGS, BEVERLY ANNE - 1960 - 2013 - Beverly Demmings, of Miramichi, passed away on Tuesday, December 31, 2013, at her residence, at the age of 53. She was the daughter of Grace (Millie) Demmings and the late John Demmings. She was a teacher and a member of the United Church of Canada. Beverly also volunteered with M.R.T.A, Friends of Beaubears Island, Nelson Doyle Dancers, Heart and Stroke Foundation, and the Ovarian Cancer Society of Canada. The family received relatives and friends from the Governor's Mansion, on Friday, January 3, 2014, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm. A celebration of Beverly's life was held on Saturday, January 4, 2014, at 2 pm, from Théâtre Gilles Laplante, Centre communautaire Carrefour Beausoleil. Rev. Olive Anne Archibald officiated the service and a performance of "Stolen Kiss" was performed by the Nelson Doyle Dancers. Stories of Beverly's early years were told by Krista Spence, and Jennifer Grant and Denise Thibodeau told stories of her adult years. Memories of her family years were told by Dot Millie, Mitchell Bubar, and Karen Mersereau. Bible verses were read by Shelly Dionne and Jacqueline Allain sang "The River", "Rise Again", and "My Heart Will Go On".
An honour guard was also formed by the Nelson Doyle Dancers.

Barbara Anne Gray, 64, formerly of Mill Road, North Haven, passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 17, 2018 at the Twin Maples Health Care, Durham. Barbara was born in New Haven on November 5, 1953 and was the daughter of the late Eugene A. and Gweneth Millie Gray. Sister of Paula Watson VanSingel (David), Linda Gray Watson (Brian), Kevin E. Gray (Cathy) and the late John R. Gray. Also survived by nieces and nephews. The family would like to extend a special “Thank You” to Dr. Peter Schwartz and staff at the Smilow Cancer Hospital and Oakhill at Laurelwoods.

1973-2019
Jason James Millie of Nackawic, NB passed away September 27, 2019 at Nackawic as the result of a motorcycle accident. Jason was born December 12, 1973 at Woodstock, NB, a son of Larry and Carol (Brown) Millie.

He is survived by his wife, Robin Setchell; his children, Briana Millie and Jordan Millie; a granddaughter, Norah; his parents, Larry and Carol Millie; his brother, Michael Millie (Victoria); the mother of his children, Sarah Sampson; his parents-in-law, John and Nancy Setchell; a brother-in-law, Teddy Setchell (Nancy); four nephews, Owen, Ben, James and Mason; several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Visitation was held at Flewelling Funeral Home, 585 Otis Drive, Nackawic, NB on Saturday, October 5, 2019 from 12 noon to 2 pm, followed by the funeral service in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Paul Legere officiating. A eulogy was delivered by Jason's brother Michael. Music was provided by Oland Monteith. Interment will be held at a later date at Glassville United Cemetery.

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Emma Amber Janet Pearson of Glassville which occurred by accident on Sunday, July 5, 2015. Born in Woodstock on May 26, 1999 she was the daughter of Brent and Kim (Underhill) Pearson.

Emma is survived by her parents, Brent and Kim; 2 brothers, Dallas and Jackson; grandparents, Amber Ross (Blair) and Irvin Underhill Irene Lloyd (Delbert); 2 aunts, Trudy Stiles (Brian) and Brenda McQuade (Roger); 7 cousins, Caitlyn Underhill, Brady Worden, Zachary Worden, Hilary Stiles, Teena McQuade, Deana McQuade and Jada McQuade as well as extended family and friends that loved her very much.

Emma is predeceased by her paternal grandparents, Murray and Janet Pearson, 1 uncle, Scott Underhill and 1 cousin, Justin Stiles.

Visitation will be held from L.R. Giberson Funeral Directors, 207 Burnham Rd. Florenceville-Bristol on Tuesday, July 7, 2015 from 4-8 pm.
