At Kent, Carleton County, August 16th., Sarah Demerchant, widow of the late Robert Demerchant, aged 84 years, leaving eight sons and one daughter to mourn the loss of a kind mother. She professed religion in early life and was one of the most faithful christians; she was highly esteemed by all who knew her. She is gone, but her influence will still live. Funeral service conducted by Rev. S. E. Sprague, assisted by Elders D. Brooks, A. Giberson, E. Sipperell, and C. W. Rideout.

Carrie was born on Nov 18, 1918 to Stephen and Carrie (Wilson) DeMerchant. The next day (19th) her mother died of the Spanish Flu. Her mother had probably contracted the deadly virus from returning Canadian soldiers from France during WW1. She was named after her mother.

The family home was in modern day Beechwood and was known as the Widow Crain place (Francais Crain). Francais was a relative of Carrie's father Stephen.

"It was here all his [Stephen] family was born and where his wife died with the flue, leaving an infant baby girl, Carrie (1918-1979). Mr and Mrs. Archie Clark took the baby and kept her until she was in her teens. She then went to live with her father again."

Our hearts are sad as we announce the passing of our precious Mom and wife Marie Velma Grant of Union Corner, NB on October 5, 2022. She passed away at home surrounded by her family. She was born at Upper Kent. NB on April 9th, 1935. Daughter of the late James and Velma (Ginson) Demerchant.

Marie is survived by her husband Cecil of 68 years. Her children Sharon Griffin (Gary), Eleanor Kelly (Tom), Doug (Shawna), and Pamela. Grandchildren Kim, Charles, Melissa, Carrie and Andrew. Step grandchildren Mitchell MacMillan, Melissa MacMillian. Great grandchildren Corbin, Colby, Hudson, Easton, Landon and Keaton.

Besides her parents Marie was predeceased by a daughter Joyce and son Raymond. Sisters Kay Morris, Audrey Young, Donna Demerchant. Brothers John, Howard, Doug and Infants Vincent and Roy.

Mom had a big heart and was always ready to lend a helping hand. She loved to garden and preserve what mother nature provided and she shared her goodies with everyone. Her only request was return the bottle if you can. Mom loved to clean, and her house was always neat and tidy. If there is any cleaning in heaven God chose wisely. She was a no-frills lady who loved the simple pleasures of life and had a special love for animals. If a stray came along, it quickly became part of the family, and we all loved her for that. Mom this isn’t goodbye. It is see ya until we meet again.

There will be no public visitation or funeral service, interment will be at St Paul’s Cemetery at a later date.

The death of Charles “Charlie” Gordon DeMerchant of Florenceville-Bristol occurred on Sunday, February 25, 2024 at the Saint John Regional Hospital. Charlie was born November 1, 1945 in Bath and was the son of the late Charles and Grace (Caldwell) DeMerchant. He was also predeceased by his beloved wife, Patricia and brother-in-law, Percy Paul.

Charlie is survived by his daughter, Tonya Anderson (Chuck); his beloved grandson, C.J. Anderson; 2 sisters, Doris Millie (Ted) and Marion Paul; several brothers and sisters in law as well as many nieces, nephews and extended family.

It is with great sadness that the family of Dianne Patricia Quinn announce her sudden passing at the Saint John Regional Hospital on August 24th, 2021.

Born in Bath, NB on February 4th, 1942, to the late Aubrey and Ruby Martin, Dianne’s birth was an unexpected surprise as she followed “older” brother Donald by only a few minutes. The twins (better known as Poppy and Posie) had a combined weight of less than 5lbs and were kept in a shoebox on the oven door for warmth. The legend is they weren’t bathed their whole first year for fear of developing a chill. Although tiny in stature compared to her much taller twin brother Poppy, she always felt and acted as if she was 6′ tall, maintaining her feisty independent nature until the end.

A proud, devoted and dedicated mother, grandmother, aunt and friend, Posie spent her life caring for her children and grandchildren. She had a passion for chocolate, Tim Horton’s coffee, Mahjong, golf and her most favorite sport, curling. For her birthday this year, her children surprised her with a video message from her idol Brad Gushue, and it was quite a hit.

Posie leaves to mourn her children Karyn (Curtis), Kristyn (Randy) and Peter (Connie) all of Saint John; her grandchildren Adam, William, Matthew, Jordan, Allyson, Kimberly; great-granddaughter Aubrey; her beloved twin brother Donald “Poppy” Martin; sister-in-law Marion Wargo; brothers-in-law George Kelly, Buck Quinn (Ida), Allison Quinn (Claudia); special nieces Stephanie, Angela, Beverly, Deana, Oma Lee and many other cherished nieces, nephews and extended family.

Predeceased by her husband Peter Frederick Quinn in 1990 and daughter Kimberly Ann in infancy. Posie was also predeceased by her beloved sisters Suzanne and Audrey; brothers Douglas “Dicey” and Dean Martin and son-in-law David Ross.

Mom had a great sense of humour and was always up for a laugh. She had specially requested her grand-dogs to be honorary pallbearers, and although she may have been kidding us a little, it can’t be said we didn’t follow directions! Sammy, Jag, Nyota, Ruby, Rudy, Nova, Luna, Zeus, Ander, Braxton kindly all have the honour of escorting Mom to a better place.

Our family would like to thank Mom’s wonderful neighbours Judy and Mark Drew and their grandson, Hunter, for everything they did each day to help Mom, enabling her to maintain her independence in the comfort of her own home. Also, a big thank you to the caring staff of SJRH Emergency Department and the kind paramedics who responded to our call.

Earl, a devoted Christian man, was involved in many aspects of the Holmesville Freewill Baptist Church. He has served as deacon, trustee, and usher throughout the years. He was also involved in many areas of his community. He was a long-time loyal member of the New Brunswick Progressive Conservative Party. He has served as a board member of the District Schoolboard and, more recently, as a board member of the Riverview Manor. He will be fondly remembered as a tireless servant and worker, loving father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend. It is with sadness that the family of David Burlin Crain announce his death which occurred at Hotel Dieu Hospital, in Quebec City. David was born January 8, 1959 in Bath and was the son of the late William and Carrie (DeMerchant) Crain. He was also predeceased by his 2 sisters, Shirley and Alta; 6 Brothers, Duncan, Gaylon, Donnie, Earl, Larry and Hilton.
David was well known for his sense of humor, and passion to tease anyone who came along. He spent many hours working in the shop, but when someone stopped in, the work ended and out came the cookies and tea. When David wasn't puttering or mingling in the shop, he could be found at the barn tending his horses and cattle.
Family meant everything to David and he would light up when someone came to visit - especially his children and grand children. He will be dearly missed.

The death of G. Milford Armour of Hartley Settlement occurred on Friday, August 9, 2019 at the Carleton Manor, Woodstock after battling COPD, the after effects of strokes, and dementia for many years. Born December 22, 1942 in Maplehurst, NB, he was the son of the late Archie and Leona (DeMerchant) Armour. Milford was predeceased by his wife, Mary Ann (Haines) in 2011, several siblings, extended family and special friends.

Milford is survived by his 6 children, Ronald Haines (Natalie), Ellen Armour, Monica Armour, Virginia Van Horne, George Armour and Greg Armour (Darcy); 5 grandchildren, Joel Haines, Brody Lyon, and Colton, Gabriel and EmmaRose Van Horne; as well as several siblings, extended family, and special friends.

He was known as Moe, Uncle Moe, Skip, and probably a few other names. He was one of at least 17 children born to Leona.

Milford loved having babies and children around, socializing with many who came to the house or his garage, charming the ladies (even the nurses and other staff at the Carleton Manor in the short time he was there), listening to country and gospel music (especially the Gaithers), watching John Wayne movies (“Big Jake! I haven’t seen that in years.”), fresh veggies, berries (especially raspberries), cake, whipped cream (“Dad, do you want some berries with that whipped cream?”), reading (Reader’s Digest, novels, and newspapers were favourites … “Don’t read all the words off the newspaper!”), Christmas, playing cards, and collecting coins. He was generous. If he had it and could give or loan it to you (food, vehicles, lodging, etc.), then he would.

He was proud of serving in the Army from approximately 1962 -1967, including a time being stationed at CFS Alert (500 miles south of the North Pole, as he would tell people). There was lots of snow there in July but he didn’t see Santa Claus while he was there. It was in the army that he learned that his official name was Golden Milford, not Milford Golden, resulting in him having to be discharged and then re-enlisted. He was proud of the medals he received for serving in CFS Alert and for Canada 150.

Milford and Mary Ann married on December 29, 1962. He moved his young family of 3 daughters to Toronto around 1969. He worked as a mechanic while there. George was born while the family lived in Toronto. Ronnie, Bev, Barb, and Becky all came to visit at various times. In 1974, he moved the family back to New Brunswick, where they built their house in Hartley Settlement around 1975. Greg was born and the family was complete. Milford worked for others for a few years before building his garage and opening Armour’s Auto Repair. Milford lived in their home until July 4, 2019 when he moved into the Carleton Manor.

Special thanks to Ellen, who was his primary caregiver since his first stroke in 2012.

Olive Barker (nee) Demerchant passed away peacefully at Westview Care Facility in Penticton BC on December 26th to reunite with her loving husband Walter at the age of 88 years. Olive was born in Bath New Brunswick on November 4th, 1932.

Olive was predeceased by her loving husband Walter, daughter Kathy Lou and son Allan.

Lovingly remembered by daughters Val Barker, Karol McBurney (Warren), Sharon Curtis and Joyce Giacomantonio. As well as sons George Barker (Ivy) & Paul Barker (Beth). She will be missed by her grandchildren Joanell Johnson Kraiger (Jeremy), Jen Johnson, Matt Barker (Kasey), Adam Barker Sarah), Christina Tennant, Colin Behan, Andrea McBurney, Dustin McBurney (Karri), Nolan Barker (Emma), Alex Barker (Kayla), Anna Pouliot, Robert Pouliot, James Giacomantonio, Christopher Giacomantonio and Angela Giacomantonio.

Olive completed Chefs Training in 1973 and worked in several restaurants in Dawson Creek and Pouce Coupe. She enjoyed cooking and baking for those she loved. Her grandchildren would spend every New Year's Eve with Grandma & Grandpa and be spoiled. She would give you the shirt off her back. She would often say "I don't have a lot but you're welcome to take anything you need."

Her favourite pastime was playing bingo with friends. She also taught a few grandchildren how to play which created a special bond between them. Olive will be missed by all who knew her. Due to Covid restrictions there will only be a small family graveside gathering.

The death of Murray Garrol DeMerchant formerly of Holmesville occurred at Riverview Manor in Bath on Wednesday, December 13, 2023 at the age of 82 years. Murray was born June 17, 1941 in Piercemont. He was predeceased by his parents Howard and Melissa (Broad) DeMerchant, and 1 great grandson Parker. Five siblings, Rose Oakes, Ronald DeMerchant, Carol Crain, Patsy DeMerchant, and Wilma McCullough.

Murray is survived by his loving wife Donna of 59 years. He leaves behind four children: Scarlett Davenport (Dwaine), Bobby DeMerchant (Lisa), Jody DeMerchant and Heidi DeMerchant (James). Ten grandchildren: Joshua, Joel, Jordan, Dustin, Danielle, Janae, Tristen, Sawyer, Riley and Silas. Seven great-grandchildren: Liam, Ben, Amira, Viola, Beau, Justice and Kash. Two brothers: Lewis DeMerchant, Herb DeMerchant, three sisters: Martha Kinney, Joyce Wallace, Myrtle Boyd. As well as several nieces, nephews and extended family.

The family would like to thank the Hotel Dieu of St. Joseph’s hospital and the River View Manor for the care given to Murray during his stay.

It is with heartfelt sadness that the family of Eileen Audrey Hoyt of Beechwood announce the death of their Mother, Grandmother and Sister who passed away at the Upper River Valley Hospital, Waterville on Thursday, June 16, 2011. Born June 11, 1933 she was the daughter of the late Miledge and Mona (Green) DeMerchant and wife of the late Donald Bertram Hoyt.

Eileen enjoyed the simpler things of life like quilting and spending time with the family and friends who loved her, including her dog Katie.

She leaves behind her children Terry Hoyt (Marlene), Gerald Hoyt (Kim), Marilyn Darrah (Peter), Brenda Crandlemire (Mark) and her grandchildren Ben Hoyt, Jason Hoyt, Hannah Crandlemire, Coles and Simon Darrah, step-granddaughter, Betty Jo Kinney (Jody) and step-great granddaughter, Marleigh Sue York, her siblings, Jean Crain, Donnie DeMerchant (Carol Ann), Betty Lavigne (Elmer), Carl DeMerchant (Sharon) and several nieces and nephews. Eileen was predeceased by her husband Donald and baby daughter Sheila, her brothers and sisters, Evelyn, Iris, Cora, Miledge, Malcolm, Gordon, and Richard.

Jean Crain
1938-2019

Jean CrainWith a mixture of sadness and relief we announce the death of Jean Crain (Demerchant). Jean fought a long, eight-year battle with Dementia. Only when we reflect on all that she was as a spouse, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, co-worker, Christian, do we realize how much she lost to this disease. The loss of her home and independence, of her ability to help out and to speak, left her so much less the woman who was known and loved by so many for so many years.

Even still, she continued to the end to be a person who endeared herself to others. While living with her Sons, Kevin (Rhonda) and Alden (Tracey), she attended the Beechwood(member) and Midland Baptist Churches, where she was loved to the end. She was also a loved member of a Small Group that met in a home in Midland. Even when unable to speak, she communicated her love to all who visited her. The staff at Wauklehegan Manor, where she spent the last 3 months of life, and to whom we are extremely grateful for such compassionate care, told stories of Jean dancing with them and trying to scare them and just being fun to have around.

Jean was an independent woman. Over the years she worked as a mail carrier, in a paper bag factory in Bowmanville, ON, for McCain Foods, as a cook at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Brantford, ON, and at Perth and Bath Hospitals (retiring from Bath). Jean cooked in camps on the oil rigs and saved enough money to build her house on the McElroy Rd.

She will be remembered as a wonderful Mother by her 3 sons, Allison (Janet), Kevin (Rhonda) and Alden (Tracey). She was a wonderful Grandmother to 6 grandchildren- Jadon (Patricia), Julie (Mark), Brydon, Jake, Cameron and Jackline. She is remembered dearly by 3 surviving siblings- Donald Demerchant (Carol-Anne), Betty Lavigne and Carl Demerchant (Sharon). She was loved by many nieces and nephews. Jean is predeceased by her parents Milledge and Mona Demerchant, Brothers Milledge, Malcolm and Richard, Sisters Iris, Cora, Evelyn and Eileen.

Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Giberson Funeral Directors. Visitation and funeral will be at the Beechwood Baptist Church. Visitation is Tuesday, 3-5 and 6-8. It is with sadness that the family of Donald "Donnie" Albert DeMerchant who was raised and resided in Tartown, announce his death which occurred on Saturday, September 10, 2022 at the Upper River Valley Hopsital, Waterville. Born August 22, 1944 in Centreville he was the son of the late Mona (Green) DeMerchant.

Donnie enjoyed wheeling, hunting, fishing and spending time at the camp. Donnie was a simple man who enjoyed the simple things in life.

He is survived by his loving wife, Carolyn; 5 children, Darryl Miller (Nicole), Diane Dugan, Eleanor Lloyd (Chester), Dwayne DeMerchant (Melinda) and Joey Miller (June Lloyd); chosen son, Henry Dugan; 11 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; 2 siblings, Rev. Michael S. Gaunce
1962-2024

Michael Samuel Gaunce of New Glasgow, Nova Scotia, passed away on March 4, 2024 at the Aberdeen Hospital, in New Glasgow, N.S. He was born October 27, 1962 in Bath, N.B. and was the son of the late Christopher and Florence Gaunce. Mike was also predeceased by his special Aunt Etha, who always kept an eye out for him.

Mike is survived by his brothers Jim Gaunce (Sandra), Peter Gaunce (Pamela), and Seth Gaunce (Valerie), as well as nieces Shawna, Dayna, Casey, Erin and Emily and nephew Logan; also grand nieces Harlow, Leni, Florence, Sadie and Charlotte and grand nephew Avery

Mike was a man of many interests including geology, computers, music and was an avid reader. He loved reading books. In his younger days, Mike enjoyed canoeing some of New Brunswick’s wild rivers with friends and Uncle Fred.

The family wishes to thank the dedicated staff of Aberdeen Hospital for their excellent and compassionate care of Mike during his stay there, as well as his friends who faithfully visited with him.

A graveside service, date yet to be determined, will be conducted later in the spring or summer at the Wharton Cemetery in Upper Kent, New Brunswick. After completing school in Perth-Andover and NBCC in Moncton, Robert moved to Slave Lake, Alberta working in the oil industry for the past 22 years. He was a loyal fan of all three Boston teams and enjoyed playing golf as often as he could.

Eileen A. Hoyt
1933-2011

It is with heartfelt sadness that the family of Eileen Audrey Hoyt of Beechwood announce the death of their Mother, Grandmother and Sister who passed away at the Upper River Valley Hospital, Waterville on Thursday, June 16, 2011. Born June 11, 1933 she was the daughter of the late Miledge and Mona (Green) DeMerchant and wife of the late Donald Bertram Hoyt.

Eileen enjoyed the simpler things of life like quilting and spending time with the family and friends who loved her, including her dog Katie.

She leaves behind her children Terry Hoyt (Marlene), Gerald Hoyt (Kim), Marilyn Darrah (Peter), Brenda Crandlemire (Mark) and her grandchildren Ben Hoyt, Jason Hoyt, Hannah Crandlemire, Coles and Simon Darrah, step-granddaughter, Betty Jo Kinney (Jody) and step-great granddaughter, Marleigh Sue York, her siblings, Jean Crain, Donnie DeMerchant (Carol Ann), Betty Lavigne (Elmer), Carl DeMerchant (Sharon) and several nieces and nephews. Eileen was predeceased by her husband Donald and baby daughter Sheila, her brothers and sisters, Evelyn, Iris, Cora, Miledge, Malcolm, Gordon, and Richard.

Visitation will be held from L.R. Giberson Funeral Directors, 207 Burnham Rd. Florenceville-Bristol, NB on Saturday, June 18, 2011 from 2-4 pm. A funeral service will follow the visitation at 4:00 pm from the L.R. Giberson Funeral Chapel. Pastor Alden Crain will be officiating. Interment will be held in the Wharton Cemetery, Upper Kent.

Jean Crain
1938-2019

Jean CrainWith a mixture of sadness and relief we announce the death of Jean Crain (Demerchant). Jean fought a long, eight-year battle with Dementia. Only when we reflect on all that she was as a spouse, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, co-worker, Christian, do we realize how much she lost to this disease. The loss of her home and independence, of her ability to help out and to speak, left her so much less the woman who was known and loved by so many for so many years.

Even still, she continued to the end to be a person who endeared herself to others. While living with her Sons, Kevin (Rhonda) and Alden (Tracey), she attended the Beechwood(member) and Midland Baptist Churches, where she was loved to the end. She was also a loved member of a Small Group that met in a home in Midland. Even when unable to speak, she communicated her love to all who visited her. The staff at Wauklehegan Manor, where she spent the last 3 months of life, and to whom we are extremely grateful for such compassionate care, told stories of Jean dancing with them and trying to scare them and just being fun to have around.

Jean was an independent woman. Over the years she worked as a mail carrier, in a paper bag factory in Bowmanville, ON, for McCain Foods, as a cook at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Brantford, ON, and at Perth and Bath Hospitals (retiring from Bath). Jean cooked in camps on the oil rigs and saved enough money to build her house on the McElroy Rd.

She will be remembered as a wonderful Mother by her 3 sons, Allison (Janet), Kevin (Rhonda) and Alden (Tracey). She was a wonderful Grandmother to 6 grandchildren- Jadon (Patricia), Julie (Mark), Brydon, Jake, Cameron and Jackline. She is remembered dearly by 3 surviving siblings- Donald Demerchant (Carol-Anne), Betty Lavigne and Carl Demerchant (Sharon). She was loved by many nieces and nephews. Jean is predeceased by her parents Milledge and Mona Demerchant, Brothers Milledge, Malcolm and Richard, Sisters Iris, Cora, Evelyn and Eileen.

Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Giberson Funeral Directors. Visitation and funeral will be at the Beechwood Baptist Church. Visitation is Tuesday, 3-5 and 6-8. The funeral service will be Wednesday at 2:00 pm from the church. Pastor Brian Wortman will officiate. The interment will be in the Holmesville Free Will Baptist Cemetery. Donnie DeMerchant
1944-2022

It is with sadness that the family of Donald "Donnie" Albert DeMerchant who was raised and resided in Tartown, announce his death which occurred on Saturday, September 10, 2022 at the Upper River Valley Hopsital, Waterville. Born August 22, 1944 in Centreville he was the son of the late Mona (Green) DeMerchant.

Donnie enjoyed wheeling, hunting, fishing and spending time at the camp. Donnie was a simple man who enjoyed the simple things in life.

He is survived by his loving wife, Carolyn; 5 children, Darryl Miller (Nicole), Diane Dugan, Eleanor Lloyd (Chester), Dwayne DeMerchant (Melinda) and Joey Miller (June Lloyd); chosen son, Henry Dugan; 11 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; 2 siblings, Rev. Carl DeMerchant (Sharon) and Betty Lavigne; chosen brother, Lester Sprague as well as several nieces, nephews and extended family.

The death of Richard Wayne DeMerchant, of Monquart, occurred on April 19, 2010 at the Saint John Regional Hospital. Richard was born in Canterbury on March 7, 1950 and was husband to Germaine (O’Donnell) DeMerchant.

Richard is survived by his wife, Germaine; Children, Annette O`Donnell, Melanie O`Donnell, Gilbert DeMerchant, Ricky DeMerchant and Jeanne DeMerchant; Grandchildren, Jessica O`Donnell, Connar & Kelsey Hanscome, and Cyle & Nathanial DeMerchant; Siblings, Eileen Hoyt, Jean Crain, Betty Lavigne (Elmer), Donald DeMerchant (Carolyn Anne) and Carl DeMerchant (Sharon); several nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held from the Holmesville Free Will Baptist Church, Holmesville on Wednesday, April 21st, 2010 from 2-4 & 7-9 pm. Funeral service will be held on Thursday, April 22nd, 2010 at 3:00 pm from the Holmesville Church. Rev. Rick Murray and Rev. Carl DeMerchant will be officiating. Interment will follow in the Holmesville Church Cemetery.
