DeMERCHANT, Perley Allison (Al)
1933 - 2012
Al passed away at St. Joseph's Hospital on Friday, June 29, 2012 after a lengthy illness. His family was with him constantly during the final month. Born in Drummond Parish, New Brunswick, he was the son of Murchie and Lavina DeMerchant. He was the third of seven children and was in his eightieth year. He is survived by his wife of fifty-six years, June (Parks), his daughters Cheryl Lafreniere (Marc), Hamilton, Ivy Biacsi (Michael), Australia and his number one son Rick (Silvana), Hamilton. Al had six grandchildren, Nicole, Suzanne and Alex Lafreniere, Aiden and Emilie Biacsi and Michael DeMerchant. Al was predeceased by his infant daughter Terri-Lynne, also by his brothers Wiley and sister-in-law Elsa, brother Angus, sisters Vera Baker and Myrtle Parker. He has one surviving sister Dorothy Smith of Guelph and one surviving brother Newman of New Brunswick. He had many nieces and nephews and his special cousins Sandra, Beverley and Doug. He was a strong Local 1005 supporter for the 38 years he spent at Stelco. He was an avid Euchre player and loved travel and camping. Together June and Al crisscrossed Canada and the U.S. camping all the way. At Al's request Cremation has taken place. Memorial Service will be held at Ryerson United Church, Main and Springer, on Sunday, July 8th at 1 p.m. with reception to follow. The family will welcome friends, co-workers and extended family at this time. A private interment of ashes will be held at a later date at Grove Cemetery in Dundas. It was Al's request that any donations in his memory be made to Ryerson United Church.
