- Obituary:
Shirley I. DeMerchant
1930-2025
It is with broken hearts that we announce the passing of our sweet mama, Shirley Irene DeMerchant, in the early morning hours of December 22, 2025, at Lang’s Lodge in Grafton, N.B. at the amazing age of 95.
Born September 2, 1930, in Bridgewater, Maine to the late Stanley and Edna (nee Hudson) Trafford Mom was predeceased by her husband Leo, son Ricky (age 16), brother Stanley (Pie), sister Geraldine, in-laws William (Bill) and Pearl Rideout and several brother in laws.
She is survived by her children Terry, Susan (Steve), Debbie (Brian), Randy, Kathy (Dale), Peter (Kim), Trent, sister Jeannette, 16 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Mom, also known as “D” or Grammie D, was the centre of our world. As stated by her granddaughter Jill, she was the glue that kept us together. Her love for her children and grandchildren knew no bounds and if you ever had the pleasure of visiting at her house you would have been greeted with a hug and a glass of water even if she didn’t know you yet. She was an amazing cook and family gatherings at her house, especially during the holidays, are some of our best memories. After raising us eight kids Mom went to work at McCain Foods for several years before retiring to enjoy her house and watch her regular tv shows like the Price is Right. Mom started journaling after Ricky passed in 1971, and right up to the week before she passed, was still writing faithfully in her journal every day. Her journals are a legacy that tells a story of her everyday life and ours. Every entry written with love.
Mom was beyond blessed to spend her last year in the comfort of her big cozy room being loved and surrounded by the best care givers at Lang's Lodge. She was not just a resident to them she was their “mama bear” too and they loved her dearly. We cannot begin to express our thanks and gratitude to Manager Jasmine and her amazing staff; for the love, care and compassion they showered on Mom. Thank you to Peter & Lydia Lang for allowing Jasmine to work her magic, along with Angela, to bring Mom home and give her the most love and best care possible during her final days. They not only cared for Mom, but they looked after us and our needs as well. There are no words to express how much that meant to Mom and us, her family.
At Mom’s request there will be no formal service just a private burial at the Tracy Mills Baptist Church in the spring. Donations can be made to the donor’s choice.
