- Obituary:
H. Kent Tompkins
1938-2025
It is with deep sadness that the family of Hazen Kent Tompkins announces his passing on August 2, 2025 at the age of 87 at Upper River Valley Hospital, Waterville, NB.
Born in Bath, NB, on May 18, 1938, Kent was the son of Hazen and Marion Tompkins. He married his high school sweetheart, Elaine Giberson, on August 20, 1958, and together they raised three children: Warren (Kim), Allison (Steeve), and Peter (Jennie). After Elaine's passing, Kent married Isabel Morton, and welcomed her children and family into his life: Curtis (Lea), Kelly (Mike), Matt (Raina), Michelle (Abbie), and Craig.
Kent had a long and distinguished career in education, serving as a teacher, principal, and eventually, superintendent. He earned his Bachelor of Education from the University of New Brunswick, and his Masters of Education from the University of Maine at Presque Isle.
Kent was an avid snowmobiler from the moment he bought his first Ski-Doo in 1967. He was deeply involved in the local snowmobile club, a dedicated basketball coach and official, and helped form the Bath Lions Club. He treasured time at his camp, where he was most at home hunting, fishing, or riding through the woods on a quad or snowmobile.
In his most recent years, he embraced his new friendships and time at the Kincardine Upper Kent United Church. He became a local music aficionado and has often been referred to as Isabel's "Roadie".
Kent took great pride in his independence and would have been pleased to know he lived on his own terms right up until the end—a fact he likely would have delivered with a grin and a wink.
He is survived by his wife Isabel and her family, his children, his grandchildren, (Baillie, Kieran, Annie, and Sam), and his niece, Beth Smith and her children.
Kent will be remembered for his integrity, his commitment to community and education, and his love of the outdoors. He lived a full and meaningful life, and he did it his way.
Kent’s family would like to say thank-you to the Upper River Valley Hospital for their comprehensive and compassionate care.
Visitation will be held from L.R. Giberson Funeral Directors, 207 Burnham Rd. Florenceville-Bristol, NB on Monday, August 4, 2025, from 6-8 pm. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, August 5, 2025, at 2 pm from Faith Memorial United Church, 175 Burnham Rd. Florenceville-Bristol. A private family interment will be held at a later date. For those who wish memorial donations made to the Bath Lions Medical Travel Fund would be appreciated.
