Dorothy R. Drost
1929-2024
The death of Dorothy Rose Drost of Riverbank, NB occurred on Tuesday, December 3, 2024, at the Upper River Valley Hospital, Waterville, NB. Dorothy was born in South Johnville, NB on March 12, 1929, and was the daughter of the late Allan and Mary Ann (Carroll) McAdam. She was predeceased by her husband of 56 years, Gerald Drost; son Alan (Brenda); grandson Joshua; 5 sisters Beatrice McAdam, Teresa Cameron, Christina Harrington, Grace Hillman, Stella Bell; infant sister Mary, and sons-in-law Roger and Marc.
Dorothy and her 5 sisters helped their father on the farm feeding the livestock, milking cows, working in the woods peeling pulp and hauling it out with the horse. Younger school days were held in a one room schoolhouse in Carlow. She walked to school most days (about 2 miles) in rain or snow. High school was spent in Bath.
In 1947 Dorothy married Gerald Drost and resided in Riverbank. Dorothy stayed at home and raised a large family of 8 children. She spent most of her time in the kitchen baking bread every other day on a wood stove. Dorothy always looked forward to spring … new life & new beginnings. Fiddleheads & fresh trout were a welcome treat. At the end of June was wild strawberries and in late summer, her favourite, raspberries. Dorothy would find just the right spot and pick for hours. She would make bottles of homemade jellies and jam. She would also make lots of pickles that would last the winter and would share with family and friends. Dorothy loved her many flowers and enjoyed digging in the large family garden
Dorothy was a very hard worker and never complained. She always made sure there was plenty to eat, and the kids were well clothed and were taught the value of a dollar. Later in years after the youngest went to school, Dorothy got her drivers licence and started work preparing hot lunches at Florenceville Elementary School. She was devoted to her Catholic faith and rarely missed a Sunday, making sure the kids went as well and said their prayers every night. She looked forward to her game shows; The Price is Right, Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune. She enjoyed Bingo, card games, and Scrabble. Quilting at St. Leo’s was also a passion. She enjoyed spending time with the other quilters. She continued until this spring when her eyesight worsened.
Dorothy is survived by her 7 loving children, Clarence Drost (Lorraine), Mark Drost (Susan), Maureen Orser, Sharon Ritchie (Gary Walsh), Michael Drost, Greg Drost (Teresa), and Angela Drost; 12 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, special nephew Steven Bell as well as many nieces, nephews and extended family.
