- Obituary:
DARKIS, Charles Maurice July 25, 1915 May 23, 2007
Charlie Darkis passed away at Nanaimo Regional Hospital. Predeceased by his wife, Gladys. Survived by his brother-in-law and friend, Norman Martin (Clara) and nieces, Linda Harris (Trevor) and Diane Scott (Bryan) and nephews, Paul Moretti, Ronald Martin (Sharon), Bruce Martin (Camilla) and families. Charlie was raised in Victoria and married Gladys in 1940. In 1941 he joined the RCAF and spent the next four years serving in Search, Rescue and Reconnaissance at the military base in Coal Harbour B.C. At war's end Charlie and Gladys bought a corner store on Cadboro Bay Rd. in Victoria. Located across from the Willows Racetrack, business was good. From 1950 to 1978 Charlie worked for B.C. Parks (Recreation and Conservation). He began his career with The B.C. Parks Branch being responsible for the redevelopment of Little Qualicum Falls Park. The B.C. Parks System was expanding and Charlie became Regional Supervisor of all Vancouver Island Parks. Having the opportunity to be involved in the development of parks on Vancouver Island was exhilarating for Charlie. He thoroughly enjoyed his work and many colleagues who became friends. Charlie was active in municipal politics in Qualicum Beach, the town that he always called home, and where he lived for over 50 years. He was a member of the Recreation Commission, an Alderman, and from 1966 to 1977 he held the position of mayor. During his term in office Mayor Darkis considered one of his greatest achievements was his concern for water conservation and the installation of water metres throughout the village, in retrospect, an environmentally forward strategy. The concrete sea wall was extended during Mayor Darkis' tenure. In 1971 Mayor Darkis had the honour of escorting Princess Anne during her visit to the West Coast. For over 50 years Charlie was a member of the Masonic Lodge Concord #79. Charlie was a gentleman. With his family and friends he enjoyed recounting stories of his life, work and travel. Charlie will be missed by those who had the honour and privilege to know him and to be part of his life. The family would like to thank Dr. Jonathan Bland and the staff at Lakeside Gardens for their care and support during Charlie's final years in Nanaimo.
