- Obituary:
With great gratitude for the gift of her life, the family of Iva Jones announces her passing on August 4, 2022; she died in St. Stephen, NB, where she had shared a home with her daughter since December of 2019. Iva was born in Debec, NB on November 2, 1928 to the late William and Claudine (Campbell) Wheeler.
She is survived by her children, Lorna Jones of St. Stephen, NB, Phillip (Marie) Jones of Quispamsis, NB, and Jennifer (Brian) Simcoe of Stouffville, ON; her grandchildren, Kayla (Michael) Yorston, Luke (Gracie) Simcoe and Tyler Simcoe, and her great granddaughter, Andie Yorston. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, Iva was predeceased by her husband, Olin Eldon Jones, her sisters, Anna, Clara, Zula, Minnie, Janet and Viola, and her brothers, Harold, Orval, Edgar, Leonard and John.
Following her graduation from Broadway High School in Woodstock, Iva began her nurses’ training at the Victoria Public Hospital in Fredericton. During this time, she was courted by her sweetheart, Olin, whom she had met following his return from service in England and Germany at the end of WW2. Olin and Iva were married in July of 1952, and established their home on “Kelly Hill” where they raised their children and were an integral part of the community. Iva continued her nursing career for a few years, and then served occasionally as a private duty nurse, assisting a number of wee folk to come into the world!
Iva was strong in her faith, and active at Woodstock Baptist Church all of her adult life. She gave leadership in children’s programs such as Awana, and in various roles with the Jean Quigg Rushton Guild, alongside women who became lifelong friends and partners in the Gospel. As well, for many years part of each summer was spent serving faithfully at Shiktehawk as camp nurse while Olin led the craft activities.
She was also a creative spirit, and was seldom without a project, be it sewing, knitting, toll painting, furniture upholstery or quilting. And oh, the goodies that came from her kitchen; pie every day for Olin (his favourite:), bread, doughnuts, cookies, pickles, jam…
Iva delighted in her three grandchildren, and was never happier than when they converged at the house on Jules Drive for summer holiday- helping Nanny make her famous strawberry jam, camping in the backyard and just having fun together.
Despite failing health in the last years of her life, Iva retained her ‘spunkiness’, quick wit and great sense of humour, and kept cheering on those Toronto sports teams! We will miss her…yet rejoice that she is with the Lord, and reunited with Olin, hers sisters and brothers, and the friends who have been waiting for her in Heaven.
Iva is resting at The Culberson Funeral Home, 188 Connell Street, Woodstock, NB.
Visitation is on Monday, August 22 at 10:00 am, funeral service at 11:00 from The Culberson Memorial Chapel with Rev. Leonard Cousins officiating, and interment at the Woodstock Rural Cemetery, Houlton Street, Woodstock, NB.
