- Obituary:
Iris I. Drost
1923-2025
Iris Irene Drost went to meet her Saviour June 27, 2025 in Ottawa, Ontario; formerly of Bath, New Brunswick. She was born August 22, 1923 to Gilbert and Bessie (nee Wallace) Marr in Devon (Fredericton), New Brunswick. She is survived by her daughter, Valerie Lamarche (Denis); 4 grandchildren—Anthony Drost (Sylvia) of Newmarket, NB; Suzanne Drost of Rusagonish, NB; Melody and Stephanie Tacit of Toronto, ON; 2 great-granddaughters—Brianna and Sara Drost of Newmarket, NB; numerous nieces, nephews and friends. She was predeceased by her husband, Wilmot Drost, and her son Brian Drost.
Iris moved to Bath in 1928, graduated from Bath High School in 1941. She was a member of the Bath Baptist Church, having been church organist for over 50 years, playing for not just church services but for many weddings and funerals in the community. Before marriage, she worked as a sales clerk at Marr’s Novelty Shop on Main Street. Being a very kindhearted person, Iris aspired to be a nurse, but caring for her very ill mother precluded formal nursing training. In the course of clerking at the store, Iris met a charming gentleman named Wilmot Drost, of Wicklow, and her heart did a backflip, as did his. They married in 1951, and raised their 2 children in Bath. Iris was a very active church member and community volunteer, raising funds for various charities, teaching Sunday School, running the ring toss booth at the annual Bath Fall Fair, bringing around the tuck shop cart at Riverview Manor, being treasurer of the Women’s Missionary Society at the Baptist Church, to name but a few of her activities. Most of all she loved being a professional homemaker and mother. God, Church, and Family were everything to her. Grief struck in 1987 with the death of her only son to leukemia, and again in 1993 when Wilmot succumbed to a heart attack. In 2013 she moved to Ottawa, ON, to be with her daughter and family. Many were blessed by her winning smile and amazing ability to listen to others. She could see people for who they are—the positives and the negatives—and chose to overlook the negatives to focus on the positives. She truly loved the people in her life, and it showed.
A Celebration of Life will be held on July 7, at Oakpark Retirement Community in Ottawa, ON. Funeral will be held on July 18, 2025 at 2:00 pm from the Bath Baptist Church with internment at the Wicklow Cemetery. Donations made to Bath Baptist Church, the Wicklow Cemetery, the Canadian Cancer Society, or the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada are much appreciated.
