Notes - Obituary:
YOUNG, Georgina Mary
(nee Underwood)
Born May 3, 1926, passed away in Victoria BC on May 14, 2014. She will be remembered and sadly missed by her children; James aka Otis, Deborah (Kirk), Thomas, John, Richard (Sharon), Karen Belyea, mother of her grandchild Genevieve and her very dear friend and collaborator Audrey Sowerby. Georgie was born in Saskatoon where she attended Elementary, High and Normal School. She had an Associate and Licentiate in Piano performance and was a piano accompanist for Music Classes at Balfour Tech in Regina. As a young school teacher she taught in the rural Saskatchewan towns of Davidson and Le Roy, where she met her husband James Edward Young, and later taught for The Qu'Appelle Diocesan School for Girls (QDS) in Regina. She also taught piano in her home and was accompanist for ballet classes in Regina. In 1982 Georgina was recognized for Outstanding Achievement in the Arts by the Regina YWCA Women's Award for her leadership with many arts and music organizations including the Regina Musical Club, and her creations of Children's Summer Musical Theatre, and Summer String Ensembles. Host Mavor Moore featured Georgina's Performing Arts Nursery School in his across Canada program on CBC. Georgina enjoyed bringing classical musicians and theatre productions to town and especially enjoyed achieving a full house audience for artists. She also enjoyed transcribing and annotating the letters of her great- grandfather Richard Port who described his impressions of Canada in 1838-42 when he was stationed in Quebec City with the Coldstream Guards. Georgina wrote a chapter book for young children entitled Gopher Tales with illustrations by Audrey Sowerby. There will be no Service at her request.https://leaderpost.remembering.ca/obituary/georgina-young-1066015597
