Helen M. Shaw
1936-2023

Helen Marie Shaw, of Simonds, New Brunswick, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, September 5, 2023, at the Upper River Valley Hospital in Waterville, New Brunswick. She was born on November 23, 1936, and was the daughter of the late Cecil and Idella Giberson.

Helen is survived by her children, Valerie Slipp of Waterville, Patty Gaunce (Jeff) of Florenceville-Bristol, Cecil Shaw (Laurea) of Simonds, Susan Shaw (Mike) of Fredericton and Rodney Shaw (Sabrina) of Bedell; Grandchildren, Anne Chaisson (Matthew), Emma Poliquin (Justin), Frank Slipp (Dafne), Crystal Kent (Thomas), Damon Gaunce (Sheena), Kathleen Patterson (Ted), Graham Shaw, Katrina Barteski (Bradley), Kaylyn Shaw (Guiliano), Daniel Shaw (Taylor), Caleb Shaw (Abby), Matthew Swim (Christin), Luke Swim (Jenny), Carissa Forbes (Brent), Isaiah Shaw (Emily) and Ashley Shaw (Samuel) and 26 great-grand children; sisters; Thelma Billings, and Mary Trecartin; sisters in law Amy (Robert) Littlejohn, Shirley Shaw and many nieces and nephews.

One of her greatest joys was living on the family farm that she and Monte made their home when they married in 1953. She enjoyed spending time in nature and found joy in the simple things in life. She loved driving her buggies out back and spent hours on her porch enjoying the view of the river, watching the grandchildren play or playing a game of crib. Many people over the years received homemade cards that she created, with a handwritten poem inside. Her grandchildren always knew that they would get a phone call from her on their birthday and specially designed clothespin at Christmas.

For years she could be seen walking the Simonds Road with her brightly coloured hats. Now she is walking the streets of gold with her precious Jesus. We entrust her to Jesus and look forward to the day when we will walk those streets with her.

She will be remembered for being a tireless volunteer at many events, including the CWL, St. Vincent de Paul Society and Epsilon Y’s Menettes’ Club. Frances will be remembered for being an exceptionally hard worker, with her knitting, sewing, quilting, and baking - hence the nickname "Gramma Cookie". She welcomed and entertained, any and all company, and could prepare a delicious meal at a moment’s notice. Her interest in all ages, and her listening ear to many, was reflected in her multitude of visits, calls and letters from near and far.

Frances is survived by her only sister, Margaret McHarg; two sister-in-laws, Anna Kilfoil and Peggy Kilfoil; her four children, Patricia Mabey, Dan Johnston (Rosemary), Joe Johnston (Joan) and Rob Johnston (Tracey); eight grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; multiple nieces and nephews; as well as her dear friend, Marg Gorman.

She will now be reunited with her husband of 57 years, Clarence J. Johnston; daughter, Marie Johnston, who died in 2019; as well as her five brothers, Bill, Gerald, Raymond, Harold and Murray Kilfoil.

Frances was a beautiful person, that led a beautiful life, always content and felt blessed. She loved her friends, family and faith unconditionally. In her words, she never expected to live "this" long. One of her many quotes that we will recall fondly, is her genuine thank you for every item, especially a bag of potatoes, "this will do me out", said with a smile.

At this time, due to the current health recommendations pertaining to large gatherings, the funeral mass will be for family members only. A celebration of Frances’ life and reception will be held at a later date in the spring. For those who wish, memorial donations may be made to the Martin Kilfoil Memorial Fund, The Newburg Cemetery Fund or a charity of the donor’s choice.

It is with broken and heavy hearts that we announce the death of Craig Robert Lovely of Richmond Corner, which occurred on Saturday, December 25, 2021 in the arms of the love of his life, Natasha Lee. Craig was born in Bath, NB on January 27, 1984 and was the son of Vanessa Hargrove and the late John Lovely.

Craig is predeceased by his father; his grandfathers Arnold Hargrove and Elvin Lovely; his nan, Dorothy Lovely; and his furbaby, Trigger (aka Biggie).

His childhood was filled with lots of cuddles, mischief, creativity, and play along with medical challenges which continued throughout his life. Craig had an impressive intelligence and recollection that allowed him to navigate adversity. With all of this, he always had time for a sarcastic quip and could always muster a smile IF something was funny; you could sure tell he was Arnold’s grandson.

Along with his other antics, Craig’s favorite offerings included the choice of a “super nose ping” or a “super wedgie plex,” both served up with his famous mischievous grin and a sparkle in his eye.

Craig had a passion for his homemade medicine that he proudly produced with his honed and most excellent horticultural skills. Craig always knew that two was better than one. He would say “a bird can’t fly on one wing” as he happily shared his gifts with friends and family.

Craig loved Natasha with all of his golden heart and together they were the definition of a perfect couple. With mutual learning and growth, they became the best version of themselves. Their hearts intertwined; they blossomed together.

He adored time with his nephews, Jace and Tye and niece, Karma along with his furbabies, Toes, Jack, and Rocko. Craig will always be loved by his mother Vanessa Hargrove of Woodstock, NB; bonus father Kevin Kelley of Hartland, NB; grandmother Geraldine Hargrove of Bath, NB; his brothers Eric Lovely of Woodstock, Sam Kelley (Jess) of Fredericton, NB, Charly Kelley (Eddie) of Halifax, NS, and Jordan and Brady Lee of Woodstock; his extended family including Sarah Taylor (Dan) of Florenceville-Bristol, NB; Nora Hargrove (Tom) of Centreville, NB; Sheila MacDonald (James) of Woodstock and their children; Clifton Hargrove (Nancy) of Fredericton and their children; Eva Calder (Joe) of Scotsburn, NS and their children; Susan Maxwell of Florenceville-Bristol; Pam Delong of Florenceville-Bristol; Cheryl Lovely of Woodstock; and Eiron Plume (Jeff) of Hanwell, NB, along with countless other family and friends whose lives he filled with laughter.

His family would like to extend their deepest thanks to all the medical staff who have supported Craig throughout his life.

930 Obituary:

It is with great sadness that the family of Dianne Patricia Quinn announce her sudden passing at the Saint John Regional Hospital on August 24th, 2021.

Born in Bath, NB on February 4th, 1942, to the late Aubrey and Ruby Martin, Dianne’s birth was an unexpected surprise as she followed “older” brother Donald by only a few minutes. The twins (better known as Poppy and Posie) had a combined weight of less than 5lbs and were kept in a shoebox on the oven door for warmth. The legend is they weren’t bathed their whole first year for fear of developing a chill. Although tiny in stature compared to her much taller twin brother Poppy, she always felt and acted as if she was 6′ tall, maintaining her feisty independent nature until the end.

A proud, devoted and dedicated mother, grandmother, aunt and friend, Posie spent her life caring for her children and grandchildren. She had a passion for chocolate, Tim Horton’s coffee, Mahjong, golf and her most favorite sport, curling. For her birthday this year, her children surprised her with a video message from her idol Brad Gushue, and it was quite a hit.

Posie leaves to mourn her children Karyn (Curtis), Kristyn (Randy) and Peter (Connie) all of Saint John; her grandchildren Adam, William, Matthew, Jordan, Allyson, Kimberly; great-granddaughter Aubrey; her beloved twin brother Donald “Poppy” Martin; sister-in-law Marion Wargo; brothers-in-law George Kelly, Buck Quinn (Ida), Allison Quinn (Claudia); special nieces Stephanie, Angela, Beverly, Deana, Oma Lee and many other cherished nieces, nephews and extended family.

Predeceased by her husband Peter Frederick Quinn in 1990 and daughter Kimberly Ann in infancy. Posie was also predeceased by her beloved sisters Suzanne and Audrey; brothers Douglas “Dicey” and Dean Martin and son-in-law David Ross.

Mom had a great sense of humour and was always up for a laugh. She had specially requested her grand-dogs to be honorary pallbearers, and although she may have been kidding us a little, it can’t be said we didn’t follow directions! Sammy, Jag, Nyota, Ruby, Rudy, Nova, Luna, Zeus, Ander, Braxton kindly all have the honour of escorting Mom to a better place.

Our family would like to thank Mom’s wonderful neighbours Judy and Mark Drew and their grandson, Hunter, for everything they did each day to help Mom, enabling her to maintain her independence in the comfort of her own home. Also, a big thank you to the caring staff of SJRH Emergency Department and the kind paramedics who responded to our call.

Arrangements are under the direction of Fundy Funeral Home, 230 Westmorland Road (646-2424). Visitation will take place on Saturday, August 28th from 10 till 11 a.m. followed by a Memorial Service in the Fundy Funeral Home chapel beginning at 11 a.m. Interment will take place at a later date.

Donations in memory of Posie may be made to The Kidney Foundation, Canadian Cancer Society or to the Heart & Stroke Foundation of New Brunswick. To send a message of condolence please visit www.fundyfuneralhome.comPublished on August 25, 2021

945 Obituary:

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Barbara Ritchie, peacefully at her home in Toronto, on Friday, August 5, 2022 at the age of 90.

Barbara now joins her beloved husband of 58 years, Cedric Ritchie (1927-2016). Devoted mother of Heather Walton and Kim Persky (Michael). Proud grandmother of Jana, Eric, Kyla and Kevin Persky; and Courtney Ritchie, Connor and Taylor Walton. Fondly remembered by her nieces and nephews, extended family, and many friends worldwide. Barbara was predeceased by her parents, and her brother Gilbert.

Born in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Barbara grew up on a farm before leaving the prairies to attend the Royal Alexandra Hospital School of Nursing in Alberta. Upon graduation she began her nursing career in Lethbridge where she met her husband Cedric. After marrying in 1957 they moved to Toronto. Despite leaving the West, Barbara remained in contact with her classmates and never failed to attend her reunions when circumstances allowed.

Family and friends meant the world to Barbara. She had a wide network of friends developed through her extensive travels and active lifestyle. She enjoyed golf, fitness classes and curling at the Donalda Club, and was an avid skier. Barbara loved spending time in the Laurentians with family and friends and particularly cherished Christmases spent in Ste. Adele. She treasured every opportunity to be together.

Barbara was a committed volunteer -- active in her church, delivering Meals on Wheels, providing programing for Senior Citizens -- and later in life, a dedicated philanthropist. She believed that everyone should have access to medical care and education, hence her philanthropic priorities focused on medical research, education, and human services. Earlier in 2022, she was honoured for her ongoing support of Fighting Blindness Canada, the Yonge Street Mission, and the Timothy Eaton Memorial Church, where she was an Honorary Trustee.

Quick to offer encouragement or words of advice, Barbara was generous with her time and always available for others. She was a vibrant model of commitment, generosity, integrity and love and we will sorely miss her.

The family will receive friends at Timothy Eaton Memorial Church, 230 St. Clair Avenue West, Toronto M4V 1R5, on Tuesday, August 16th at 10:00 a.m. The funeral service will follow at 11:00 a.m. The service will be livestreamed and the link can be found on the funeral home website.

If desired and in lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to Fighting Blindness Canada, the Timothy Eaton Memorial Church, the Yonge Street Mission or a charity of your choice. Condolences and memories may be forwarded through www.humphreymilesnewbigging.com.

952 Obituary:

It is with great sadness the family announces the passing of Avis Isabelle Whitehouse at Thomas Hall, Shannex Parkland, Fredericton, on Sunday, January 8, 2017. She was born August 20, 1922, in Mount Pleasant, only daughter of the late Vinal and Olive (Woodcock) Derrah. Avis was predeceased by her husband, Arlie, son, Wayne, and brothers James, George, Charlie, Earl, Ray and Gerald.

Avis is survived by daughter, Darlene Whitehouse-Sheehan, grandchildren, Caroline (Rolly) and Patrick (Sarah), and their father Kevin Sheehan. She is also survived by great grandchildren Elsa, William and Allison who brought much happiness to Grandma Avis, as well as sisters-in-law, Wilma Orser and Sydney Derrah, and many nieces and nephews.

Avis was a devoted wife, mother, and community member. She lived most of her life in Knowlesville where she was an active member of the United Baptist Church and Women’s Institute. Avis was never happier than when she was preparing a big meal for family or friends, working in her garden, square dancing, playing cards or going camping with good friends. She worked on the family farm, side by side with her loving husband, for many years, and later in life for Roy Hemphill and Sons, turning out scores of a variety of brush handles. Avis spent over ten happy years in the Hartland area with family and friends before moving to Fredericton in 2011.

The staff at both Brunswick and Thomas Hall, Shannex Parkland, shared many a laugh with Avis during her five years with them. As they so frequently related, her quick wit and unexpected retorts kept them chuckling. Avis spoke often of the love and kindness staff showed to her.

Arrangements are in the professional care of Britton Funeral Home, 2 High Street, Hartland, from where visitation will be held on Wednesday, January 11th from 4 to 7 pm. The funeral service will be held on Thursday, January 12th at 1:00 pm from the Lorne Britton Memorial Chapel at the Britton Funeral Home. Interment will be in the Greenwood Cemetery at a later date. 970 Obituary:

It is with much sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the death of Neeltje (Nelly) Omvlee of Bedell Settlement at the Upper River Valley Hospital on Tuesday March 28, 2023 at the age of 80. Neeltje was born in Holland on April 16, 1942, to the late Frank and Wilhelmina (Mien) Habold.

Survived by her husband Roelof, son Roland Omvlee (Cheryl), daughter Wendy Omvlee (Pieter), and her grandchildren, Jonathan Omvlee (Miranda) and Christina Omvlee (John).

Survived by her brothers, Brian Habold (Joyce), George Habold (Ina) and John Habold, her sisters, Wil Bijleveld (Daan), Liesbeth Stapper and Nine Spijker (Leendert) and Marian Vanderweiden, her brothers and sisters-in-law, Henk Omvlee, Gerard Omvlee (Ineke) and Hans Omvlee (Ellie) and Wil Beitsma. And of course also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. Besides her parents she was predeceased by her older brother Rinus Habold and her older sister Pea de Groot, her brothers-in-law, Jaap Omvlee, Jan Omvlee, Ben Omvlee, Fred Omvlee, Jan de Groot, Henk Hoogeveen and Henk Stapper, her sisters-in-law, Fini Hoogeveen, Aaltje Omvlee, Sjoukje Omvlee, Boukje Omvlee and Gezien Omvlee, her nieces Christina de Groot, Anthoinette Omvlee and Simone Stapper.

She loved her family and friends immensely. She especially loved the title of Oma to Jonathan and Christina. When Jonathan and Christina were quite young, they would often spend Saturday mornings at Oma's. Nelly would do crafts with them, dance with them and allow them to eat Cheesies and ice cream until they burst, and then return them to Roland and Cheryl's.

Nelly knew everyone and everyone knew Nelly. You could be at Murray's Restaurant, at the grocery store or at just about anywhere in and around the Woodstock area and she would run into people she knew. She was interested in everyone and wanted to know how they were doing and what they were up to.

Before Nel's career in farming began she was a nurse. And with that in the early 1970's she helped the local doctor in de Meije bring several children into the world as a midwife. And then once the local veterinarian got wind of that, she also helped him out with several cesarean sections on cows.

Nelly was raised on a small farm in de Meije, Holland, so she had some idea of what she was getting into when she and Roel started farming in Holland in 1969. They divvied up what they were each responsible for to run a successful farm early on in their business venture. Roel looked after the cows and did the field work and Nel fed the calves, looked after the bookkeeping, raised the kids and made sure dad had his 3 square meals per day. This recipe for success served them very well when they immigrated to Canada in 1977 and remained with some changes occuring when Roland became an integral part of the farm in the late 1980's and most recently the addition of Jonathan to the team at Roelridge Dairyfarm.

She was also happy and proud of the success in the respective careers of Wendy, Pieter, Cheryl, Christina, Miranda and John.

Nelly was quite busy with the farm; however, she did make time to be part of a farm women's organization, the CPB in Holland in the 1970's and later she was a director for the NB Federation of Agriculture and involved with the local (Woodstock area) dairy committee during the 1980' and 1990's. She was a mainstay with PALS at the St. Paul's Presbyterian Church during the 1990's and a member of the Ladies Guild at St. Paul's also. And for many years she helped with coffee time after church at St. Paul's.

If all of that was not yet enough, she hosted hundreds of students over the years at Roelridge Dairyfarm. Schoolbus loads of children would visit the farm where Nel would explain how a dairy farm worked and that milk does not just "appear" at the grocery store. She explained the importance of nutrition, reproduction, animal welfare and loved to show off her calves, and of course the students loved the animals; although many had to get used to "the smell in the barn". Over the years we can only estimate the hundreds, if not thousand(s) of calves she raised.

Speaking of hosting: over the years both Roel and Nel hosted many friends and family at the farm. Some for a few days and some for several weeks. Nel didn't bat an eye. She provided meals, beds and entertainment. As one nephew put it, "I remember tante Nel as a sweet, hospitable, firm aunt. You knew you were welcome at the farm, with the knowledge that the business of farming had to continue, but she was a loving aunt."

Although those of us who know and love Nelly, we will miss her terribly, but we know that she is at peace with the Lord and she is enjoying heaven.

Visitation will be held on Sunday April 2, 2023 at the Carleton Funeral Home, 337 Lockhart Mill Road from 7 to 9 PM. 973 Obituary:

It is with profound sadness that we announce the loss of a dearly loved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend after a courageous 23 month battle with cancer. Robert Douglas (Bob) Anderson was born December 15, 1948, son of the late R. Wiley Anderson and M. Elizabeth (Cox, Anderson) Reeleder. Bob was predeceased by his parents, stepfather, Ronald Reeleder, sister, Louise Page and her husband Raymond, brother-in-law Richard Trafford, and nephews Gregory Trafford and Peter Kelly.

He leaves to mourn his beloved wife of 46 years, Shirley (Kelly) Anderson, his daughters, Nicole (Nick) Munro, Natalie (Chris) Stacey, and his grandchildren Anderson and Seth Munro and Claire Stacey. He will be sadly missed by his sister, Diane Trafford, nieces and nephews, Linda (Brian) Kilpatrick, Cynthia Hines, Granville (Carrie) Page, Janice Page, Rayma (Dan Petrie)Veniot and Steven (Janice) Trafford and their families. Also saddened by the loss are brothers and sisters-in-law, Wayne (Sharon) Kelly, Walter (Cheryl) Kelly, Sheila (Gladwyn) Piper and Judy (Ken) Bertin and their families.

Bob's most favorite place to be was at the cottage on North Lake. Whether it be in a boat, on his four wheeler, or in his truck cruising the woods for an "elusive forest chicken". Spending time there with his family around him was what he wanted to be doing. Chores around the yard were the best for him when his grandchildren were at his side, and driving the boat or four wheeler were the most enjoyable with a grandchild on his lap.

Visitation will be held at L.R. Giberson Funeral Directors, 207 Burnham Road, Florenceville-Bristol on Saturday June 17, 2017 from 4 to 8 p.m. The funeral service will be on Sunday at 2:00 p.m. from the funeral home chapel with Rev. Mary Taylor officiating. A private family interment will follow in St Paul's United Church Cemetery in Centreville. It is with profound sadness that we, the family, announce the sudden passing of our beloved father, Eldon York, who passed away at his home on February 17, 2023.

Eldon was a Stationary Engineer by trade and was employed with McCain Foods for 35 years. He also could be found at the arenas and curling clubs, up and down the river valley, making ice, doing maintenance and taking the ice out.

She has lived in Beechwood for most of her life. She loved telling stories of her youth with her mother and her brothers whom she loved dearly. Even in her later years she would tell stories of her young years living beside Maskell Brook. She said that like most people of those days , they never had a lot to eat, regularly stepped onto a cold floor on the winter mornings but nobody seemed to ever complain. When she finished high school in Bath , she taught school for a little while up in the Kilburn area. She even got a job in Deer Island cleaning fish with her sister in Laws.

She fell in love and married Frank Kearney on April 19,1947. Their only daughter, Terri was born on Jan 15th, 1953. Anybody that ever met Terri will know what we mean when we say that She and her mother were a very special team . Terri never married and she and Eleanor lived together in the family home until Terri’s passing. Frank and Eleanor built a home in Beechwood up beside Franks brother, Holland in 1961. That is where Eleanor lived until she went to the manor in September of 2021.

Her mother , Gussie , moved in with them shortly after and that became the meeting place for all her brothers and uncles and aunts and cousins over the years. Everyone was welcome and everyone was fed very well.

999 Obituary:

James Oliver Salmon
1928-2018

James "Jim" Salmon, 90, peacefully died August 18, 2018, at the Church of St. John and St. Stephen Home, Saint John, NB. Jim is survived by his two children, Leslie Johnston (Patrick) of Bedford, NS and Larry Salmon (Luan) of Saint John, NB; his sister, Pauline Duff (Bill) of Sussex and his four grandchildren, Vicky and Becca Johnston and Zoë and Zachary Salmon. He was predeceased by his loving wife, Jean, his brother, Arnold and his sister, Hazel.

Jim was born in Debec, NB, June 19, 1928, in a house with no electricity. Jim was a devoted family man. He took his family to Portland United Church every Sunday. Jim’s passion for music led him to being in charge of the church sound system, recording the service every week for those that were unable to make it to church. He enjoyed taking his family on trips, especially PEI and Florida. He shared his love of hunting and fishing with his son, Larry. Jim retired from NBTel after an impressive 45 years of service. After retirement, he enjoyed travelling across North America with Jean by his side in their white Cadillac.

In his younger years, Jim enjoyed boxing, hockey and softball. In his later years, he traded his gloves, hockey stick and bat for his new obsession, golf! He was always the first one on the golf course as soon as the sun came up, and took pride in playing over 100 rounds of golf each season, reducing the cost to an impressive $3/round.

Jim was always willing to help out anyone in need. He and Jean regularly volunteered their time at Romero House and he could always be counted on to lend a helping hand.

After his stroke, Jim could often be seen driving around Milledgeville in his electric wheelchair, with his orange flag waving and his trusty camera in his pocket. He loved taking pictures of everyone he knew, but most especially his grandchildren.

Jim was able to enjoy living on his own until the impressive age of 89, however, he could not have done that without the special and loving care from Jennifer Lutes. Jennifer cared for and loved Jim as if he were her own father, for which the family is extremely grateful. Jim lived out the remainder of his time at the Church of St. John and St. Stephen Home, where he was cared for by exceptional staff.

There will be visitation on Wednesday, August 22, from 2-4 pm and 6-8 pm at Brenan’s Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John, NB (506-634-7424). The funeral will be held on Thursday, August 23 at 11:00 am at Portland United Church, 50 Newport Crescent, Saint John, NB.

If you wish to remember Jim, donations to Romero House or a charity of choice would be truly appreciated.
