805 Obituary:

Cecil B. Shaw
1925-2023

Cecil Baxter Shaw was born on the 28th of September 1925 to the late Dean and Vera Shaw. He passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 25th 2023 at the age of 97 years.

Cecil was predeceased by his first wife Peggy Shaw (Stiles) in 1989 and his siblings, Winnie Purcell, Gerald Shaw, Harold Shaw, Nadine Graham and Monte Shaw.

Cecil is survived by his loving and devoted current wife, Shirley Delong-Shaw, whom he married in 1990; his beloved sons, Roger Shaw (Eveline) and Gary Shaw (Lori); his sister Amy (Robert) Littlejohn; his Sister in Law, Helen Shaw; four grandchildren and seven great grandchildren; Step-sons, Neville Delong (Janet) and Dana Delong (Joan), and many step grandchildren, great grandchildren and nieces, nephews and extended family.

Cecil served as a driver/mechanic in the Royal Canadian Air Force during the Second World War. After his release from war-time service in 1947, he returned to the family farm in Simonds, New Brunswick where he eventually realized that he was not cut out to be a successful farmer and he rejoined the RCAF in 1951 where he served until 1977.

Throughout his extensive military career, Cecil always maintained a high level of physical fitness and he competed in national sporting events such as badminton and softball. He also enjoyed a great game of checkers and cribbage (usually winning most of them).

Cecil was renown as a fair but demanding supervisor and it was often said that he was very hard to work for but very easy to work with. After a multitude of military postings throughout Canada and Europe, Cecil finally retired to the Shaw family home in Simonds NB where he was employed for many years driving a school bus and watching his bus-riding school children grow into beautiful young adults.

He was very active in the Royal Canadian Legion and held many positions at the local and provincial levels. If you needed something done, you could always depend upon Cecil to give his best efforts to get it accomplished as quickly and efficiently as possible.

His hallmark kindness, humour and generosity of spirit, endeared him to all that knew him. His life was marked by a legacy of sacrifice in the service of others, his peace well earned. He always answered the call. "First to Volunteer, Last to Complain."

A deeply religious man, Cecil frequently sang "If I asked the Lord to Walk With Me." His life etched the words he sang. A true servant of the Lord, with a life well lived. He was ready to meet his Maker and we look forward to the day we shall see him again.

A Celebration of Life will be held in May 2023 with details to follow. Our sincere thanks to the Doctors, Nurses, Physio and other staff of the Dr. Everett Chalmers Veterans Health Unit at 680 Priestman Street, Fredericton. If so desired, memorial donations can be made to the Veterans Health Unit or a charity of the donor's choice.

A Celebration of Life for Cecil will be held on Saturday May, 6, 2023 at the Hartland Royal Canadian Legion from 1:00 p.m. to 3 p.m. On Sunday, May 7th there will be a second service held at 10:00 a.m. at the Simonds Advent Christian Church, followed by the interment in the Middle Simonds Cemetery.

Cynthia R. Salmon
1960-2024

We are devastated to announce the death of Cynthia Rose Salmon at the age of only 64 years, which occurred on Saturday, November 30, 2024, at the Upper River Valley Hospital, Waterville.

Cindy was born in Bath, NB and was the eldest child of the late Paul and Stella Salmon (Budrow). She was also predeceased by her beloved sister, Susan Watson.

It’s impossible to convey the formidable, exuberant presence we have lost in Cindy’s passing. For those who loved her, the loss is a chasm that can never be filled. Cindy was spontaneous, creative, and filled every moment of life with fun-even the difficult ones. She loved profoundly, and loved none more than husband Floyd and only child, Candace. There was nothing she would not do for them, and ultimately, she fought against an impossible medical condition and beat the odds for over a decade to share every possible moment with them.

Cindy’s most frequent parenting motto was, “have all the fun you can have,” a recognition of her understanding that our time in this world is short and joy is paramount. She never stopped planning for the next adventure, and up until 48 hours before her passing, was knitting a sweater for her canine “baby boy” and planning a move to Ottawa.

Cindy is survived by her husband Floyd Cronkhite and daughter Candace Salmon; canine son Fergus; sister Sandra Gagnon; niece Samantha Arndt; nephews Gerard Gagnon and Bradley (Brianne) Watson; aunts Shirley (Gerald) Denny and Shirley Clark; step-mother Louanna Salmon Demerchant (Howard); numerous treasured cousins, extended family and friends, including Tammy Kearney, who despite any geographic distance in their lives remained the best and most loyal of friends and Anne Inman and Stacey Lloyd, who rearranged their lives to be present and supportive in difficult times. Our gratitude is forever.

Visitation will be held at L.R. Giberson Funeral Directors, 207 Burnham Rd. Florenceville-Bristol on Wednesday, December 4, 2024, from 12:00pm - 2:00pm. A graveside service will follow at the Mineral Cemetery. Snacks and the party will be held at 40 Mountain View Crescent, Oakland, after the service. The party is what Cindy really wanted. Although the sorrow we feel is deep, we know that joy cometh in the morning. We can find it together, even in the darkest of times. All are welcome to bring their light to these post-service shenanigans.

Our eternal thanks to the Moncton City Hospital and Dr. Kathy Ferguson, Dr. Kristina Kemp and Nurse Kelly, Dr. James Hudson and the incredible hospital nursing staff for years of exceptional care. Thanks also to Dr. Muhammad Hossain at URVH for the most kind and gentle care in the end.

For those who wish, memorial donations may be made to the Moncton City Hospital Foundation. In lieu of flowers or donations, though, Cindy would want you to take that money and go on a spontaneous adventure with someone that you love. Have all the fun you can have.

Cindy will rest forever in view of our beloved Moose Mountain, from where generations of our family have come. We take some peace in knowing that at the end, we all go back to the mountain.

“I lift my eyes up to the mountain from whence cometh my help? My help cometh from the Lord, maker of heaven and earth.” … Psalm 121

Daniel F. Johnson : Volume 85 Number 2219

Date August 12 1893
County Carleton
Place Woodstock
Newspaper Carleton Sentinel

Glassville - On the forenoon of Sunday 6th, our village cemetery was once more
the scene of a large funeral - the interment of the late Alexander CURRIE of
Knowlesville (Carleton Co.) who quietly passed to his rest the previous Friday,
age 62 years. His dying bed was surrounded by members of his family, and others,
he having resided on the old homestead for the last 25 years - a farmer of no
mean reputation, hard working and industrious, prompt in all his business
arrangements and a friendly and obliging neighbor. He was originally of Scottish
descent, but came to New Brunswick many years ago from Canada. After interment
with service at the grave by Rev. J.K. Bearisto, the company assembled in the
church to listen to the minister of Aberdeen.

DARKIS, Charles Maurice July 25, 1915 May 23, 2007

Charlie Darkis passed away at Nanaimo Regional Hospital. Predeceased by his wife, Gladys. Survived by his brother-in-law and friend, Norman Martin (Clara) and nieces, Linda Harris (Trevor) and Diane Scott (Bryan) and nephews, Paul Moretti, Ronald Martin (Sharon), Bruce Martin (Camilla) and families. Charlie was raised in Victoria and married Gladys in 1940. In 1941 he joined the RCAF and spent the next four years serving in Search, Rescue and Reconnaissance at the military base in Coal Harbour B.C. At war's end Charlie and Gladys bought a corner store on Cadboro Bay Rd. in Victoria. Located across from the Willows Racetrack, business was good. From 1950 to 1978 Charlie worked for B.C. Parks (Recreation and Conservation). He began his career with The B.C. Parks Branch being responsible for the redevelopment of Little Qualicum Falls Park. The B.C. Parks System was expanding and Charlie became Regional Supervisor of all Vancouver Island Parks. Having the opportunity to be involved in the development of parks on Vancouver Island was exhilarating for Charlie. He thoroughly enjoyed his work and many colleagues who became friends. Charlie was active in municipal politics in Qualicum Beach, the town that he always called home, and where he lived for over 50 years. He was a member of the Recreation Commission, an Alderman, and from 1966 to 1977 he held the position of mayor. During his term in office Mayor Darkis considered one of his greatest achievements was his concern for water conservation and the installation of water metres throughout the village, in retrospect, an environmentally forward strategy. The concrete sea wall was extended during Mayor Darkis' tenure. In 1971 Mayor Darkis had the honour of escorting Princess Anne during her visit to the West Coast. For over 50 years Charlie was a member of the Masonic Lodge Concord #79. Charlie was a gentleman. With his family and friends he enjoyed recounting stories of his life, work and travel. Charlie will be missed by those who had the honour and privilege to know him and to be part of his life. The family would like to thank Dr. Jonathan Bland and the staff at Lakeside Gardens for their care and support during Charlie's final years in Nanaimo.

Dean C. Estey
1953-2025

The death of Dean Claire Estey, of Woodstock, NB and formerly of Florenceville, NB occurred on March 20, 2025 at the Upper River Valley Hospital in Waterville, NB. Born on June 30, 1953, he was the son of the late Arnold and Rose Estey. Dean was also predeceased by his wife, Cheryl and one brother, Graydon Estey.
Dean is survived by his two children, Jeremy Estey (Angie Paxman) and Janna (Nick) Larsen; Grandsons, Oliver and Atticus Larsen; Siblings, Helen Estey, Dwayne Estey, and Lloyd Estey; nieces and nephews, Lindsay, Sean, Kendra and Jason.

Dean grew up in the small village of Florenceville where he attended grade school with his siblings. In his younger years it was evident to all who knew him what he excelled in, and with the guidance of his sister, he completed Auto Mechanic school in Edmundston, NB in 1973. He pursued his reputable career at Connell Chrysler, Fox Ford, Valley Honda and the Department of Transportation in Woodstock.
Dean took pride in his family and his beloved 1967 Dodge Dart. He participated in many drag races over the years in Pennfield and Moncton with Mike Shaw and Donnie Tweedie. His love for engines had no boundaries; Dean lived and breathed for tractor pull season and looked forward to these weekends all year round with his son. Dean and his family spent most weekends at the Estey homestead in Florenceville where many friends and family gathered day and night where the door was always open. Dean was a sociable man and knew someone wherever he went. Dean enjoyed spending time with his grandson’s and loved to treat them to McDonald’s where his wallet was fully stalked with gift cards. Dean will be remembered for his great sense of humor, quick-whitted one-liners, foolishness, and rocking his socks and sandals attire. Dean had faith in our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ and is now walking with Him and his bride, Cheryl. We will be missing him on this side of heaven and anxiously awaiting to be reunited for all of eternity.

879 Obituary:

Donald A. Wolverton
1970-2023

Donald Allan Wolverton III, now the brightest light in our skies, as on Saturday, May 6, 2023 the world lost one of the good ones; the best father, husband, son, brother, family man and friend we could ever know, full of integrity and kindness. Donald was home surrounded and loved by the strength of his Team Wolverton until Friday, in Lower Knoxford. He took his final rest at Hotel Dieu Hospital in Perth-Andover, NB.

A man with great values placed in heritage and legacy. The first son of Donald Thomas Wolverton II and Carol Wolverton. Born January 26th, 1970 in Burlington ON. Donald grew up in Carleton County, learning the love of the land & nature, from his elders. He would learn to hunt, fish, garden and farm not just the land but also the water, as he and his father developed not one but two trout farms in Carleton and Victoria Counties and played active roles in the NB Trout Farmer's Association. Donald's post secondary studies were all for the focus of his and his father's business. Donald studied Aquaculture at NBCC St Andrews and later, as a young mature student, pursued a Business Degree from UNB. Making meaningful friendships in those times, that continue to support his family now.

Donald traveled to Fredericton to meet his future wife Lisa Christie-Wolverton on an August 2002 afternoon, engaged May 2003 and married June 19, 2004. They quickly fell in love and committed to each other to develop a lifetime of memories. In a short time, they produced 4 of the greatest testimonies to the man Donald is, their own personal sunshines: Donald IV "DJ", Olivia, Abigail and Kaitlyn. With joy and gratitude, they raise their children in the greater community of Centreville. Donald strove to give back to his community, volunteering at various events, sitting on committees and supporting his wife to play a similar role. Through all these actions, they learned to know and love the 'village' that helped raise their children and provided indescribable support the last few years.

As the era of Trout farming changed for him and his father, Donald focused on a new career of almost 20 years and became a successful production planner for McCain Foods Canada, working with multiple plants across the country. His co-workers quickly became part of our growing family and ultimately a rock in most recent years.

Donald enjoyed travelling and new adventures, which he absolutely wanted to share with his family. As some may know, Donald had a unique hobby of entering contests. He became quite savvy and dedicated and was able to share with his family vacations, appliances, a set of power tools for both he and his father, witnessing the first gold medal won by Canada on Canadian soil at the 2010 Winter Olympics, a visit from a New England Patriot's Player to the community, meeting Keith Urban, really some of the most intriguing prizes you might not expect but all in the goal of improving his family's life.

Almost absolutely all aspects of his life, became identified by his role as a father. He is survived by his wife, Lisa Christie-Wolverton; their four children Donald IV "DJ", Olivia, Abigail and Kaitlyn; his mother, Carol Wolverton; one brother and two sisters, 5 nephews and 1 niece, several aunts and uncles and cousins, and Lisa's family, as well. Donald is sadly predeceased by his father, Donald T Wolverton, and his uncle, David Wolverton.

Visitation will be held from L.R. Giberson Funeral Directors, 207 Burnham Rd. Florenceville-Bristol, NB on Friday May 12, 2023 from 5 to 8pm. Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, May 13, 2023 at 4:00 pm from the L.R. Giberson Funeral Chapel. The funeral will be livestreamed and can be viewed on the L.R. Giberson Funeral Director’s Facebook page. Interment will be in the Tracey Mills Cemetery. A reception to follow, provided by the River Valley 4-H Club at the Western Valley Multiplex, Centreville NB.

For those who wish, memorial donations could be made to the wonderful River Valley Cancer Support Group, the Centreville Proud Fund, or so near & dear to our hearts and Donald's values, the River Valley 4H Club. Most of all, be inspired by Donald's humble dedication to making the world a better place by little acts, reach out to your community, the youth or the elderly, all groups in between, offer your time, your smile, take each opportunity to leave where you are a better place.
