1503 | Obituary: Brenda Jardine 1949-2018 The family of Brenda (Millie) Jardine of Nackawic, NB, sadly announce her peaceful passing on August 17, 2018 at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital in Fredericton, NB. Brenda, a devoted and loving wife, mother and grandmother, passed away as she had lived, quietly and privately in the presence of her husband and children. Brenda was born in Bath, NB on October 3, 1949, the tenth child of John and Beatrice (Foreman) Millie. She attended school in Bath, NB, graduating from Bath Regional High School, before going on to Teacher’s College in 1967. She married Darryl Jardine of Newcastle, NB in 1970. Brenda was passionate about her family - it was always the central focus of her life and she loved nothing more than having everybody together for one of her signature meals. In addition to her husband and children, her five grandchildren were her great loves. They will surely miss her ‘Grandma rolls’, chocolate chip cookies, story times, sleep overs and having her sing them songs. They all loved their grandma dearly, she was a very special presence in all of their lives. She is survived by her husband of 47 years, Darryl Jardine; her children, Jeffrey (Natalie) of Fredericton, NB, Tim (Katherine) of Rothesay, NB and Shannon (Nick) of Beechville, NS; five grandchildren, Ryan, Halle, Mallory, Thomas and Meghan; two sisters, Ena and Anne and brothers Larry (Carol) and Ted (Dot). Brenda was predeceased by her parents, her brothers, Irvine and Don and sisters Grace, Gwen and Sheila. Brenda had superior strength and sense of conviction, qualities that she brought to her teaching career that spanned over 35 years. Her career focused on elementary school and junior high school students, teaching in Bath, Saint John, Nackawic, Millville, Canterbury and Keswick Valley; it was hard for her to go anywhere in southwestern New Brunswick without running into somebody she taught. She also worked as a literary supervisor at School District 28 in Woodstock. Brenda retired from teaching in 2004 but remained on hand to supply teach for several years. She was a natural teacher, meeting the needs of all the children she taught. Her students loved her and affectionately called her ‘Mrs. J’. Brenda was always cognizant of those less fortunate and provided many pairs of sneakers, winter jackets and meals for children in need; she always had a spot for children. Additionally, Brenda was a mentor to many fledging teachers. She would naturally take them under her wing and support and guide them through their early teaching years in the classroom. Brenda was a member of the Kirk United Church in Nackawic, NB where she taught Sunday School and prepared and served countless meals for Senior Dinner day. Although there will be no visitation, friends are welcome to attend a funeral service to be held at Kirk United Church, 29 Landegger Drive, Nackawic, NB on Tuesday, August 21, 2018 at 2 pm with Alice Finnamore officiating. A reception will follow in the church hall. Pallbearers will be Ruth Giberson, Anne Wilson, Sally Richards, Melanie Dingee and Carol Millie. In lieu of flowers, Brenda has suggested that donations in her memory be made to the Kirk United Church, Nackawic Elementary School (Breakfast Program) or Nackawic Middle School (Breakfast Program). Arrangements by Flewelling Funeral Home, Nackawic, NB. | MILLIE, Brenda Beryl (I4280)

1508 | Obituary: Daniel F Johnson : Volume 95 Number 2285 Date : January 19, 1895 County : Carleton Place : Woodstock Newspaper : Carleton Sentinel The late Mrs. John MILLIE, nee Isabella BAIN, was born at Dunfernline, Fifeshire, Scotland in August 1815. She was the d/o late Peter BAIN of Leslie, same county and niece of Sir William BAIN, R.N., who was knighted by the Queen on Granton Pier, Edinburgh, on the occasion of Her Majesty's first visit to Scotland. Sir William Bain was considered at the time' one of the ablest, as he certainly was the oldest naval officer on the eastern coast. He subsequently entered the service of the mercantile marine and became one of the distinguished steam navigators between Leith and London - finally commodore of the Steam Shipping Co.'s fleet. In due course the deceased was united in marriage to him who now mourns her loss, John MILLIE, a native of Monimail, Fifeshire. The fruit of this union was three children, the two eldest of whom died in Scotland. With her husband and youngest child, Peter BAIN, now married in Glassville (Carleton Co.) and an accountant of the firm Lynch Bros., she came to New York in 1853. The family remained in the States until 1859, when they came to Westmorland, N.B., where Mr. Millie was engaged in the service of the Westmorland Olive Freestone Co. Thence he removed to Glassville in June 1861 before Mr. Glass's settlers arrived here from Scotland. In Glassville Mr. Millie engaged in farming and has all along been considered an agriculturalist in excellent standing. Though himself a man of intelligence, energy and enterprise, a good deal of his success in life was undoubtedly owing to the management and shrewdness no less than to the co-operation of his deceased partner whose educational training in her youth was of a superior nature. For a year of two past Mrs. Millie's health had been gradually giving way. Some time age she met with an accident which no doubt hastened her end. She lingered on with brief intermissions of temporary sickness till early morn. Jan. 1st, when surrounded by her family circle, she peacefully fell asleep in Jesus. She leaves an aged husband, son and daughter. Mrs. Millie's remains were consigned to their last resting place Thursday afternoon, Jan. 3rd, Rev. J.K. Beairsto holding services at the house, church and grave. ******************** Daniel F. Johnson : Volume95Number2245 DateJanuary 5 1895 CountyCarleton PlaceWoodstock NewspaperCarleton Sentinel d. 1522 | Obituary: Fabiola (Bodgie) Elizabeth Jardine It is with great sadness that the family of Fabiola Elizabeth (Bodgie) Jardine announce her passing on January 8, 2022, at the age of 93 years. Bodgie was born in Buffalo, New York on March 20, 1928. Her family later resided in Montreal, QC before returning to Nordin, New Brunswick. She was the only daughter of Alexander (Sandy) Ryan and Bertha (Brune) Ryan. She is pre-deceased by her husband William (Bill) Jardine, son of the late Claude and Francis (Maltby) Jardine; brothers Joseph (Sonny) Ryan and Thaddeus (Toodles) Ryan; sister-in-law Joan (Jardine) Tozer; son-in-law Don Green; and daughter-in-law Brenda Jardine. Bodgie married Bill Jardine on Feb 9, 1948, and after 62 years of marriage, was at his side when he passed in 2010. She is survived by one brother, James (Tony) Brune Ryan of Nordin and her 8 children: Darryl, Sandy (Barb), Jane Green, Elizabeth (Boodie) Tozer, James, Norah, Jennifer Cleghorn (Terry), and Lisa (Don); 19 grandchildren: Wade, Jeffrey, Kimberley, Aaron, Mark, Sarah, Timothy, Cher, Andrew, Jody, Matthew, Shannon, Lindsay, Chelsea, Trey, Haylee, Stephen, Michael, and Katherine; and 27 great-grandchildren. During a trip to Europe in 1973, Bodgie noted that the weather in Germany, on June 5, was “sonny and warm”. “Sonny”, spelled with an “o” (like her brother’s name). Some might think this was an error but to know Bodgie was to know that she was always thinking of others. It was common to have her call you by 2 or 3 names before she landed on the right one. She had so many people to love and was loved by so many. Her kitchen calendar had every family member’s birthdate noted (all 8 children, 19 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren) and everyone received cards for their birthday. Her china cabinet had the most recent photos of her great grandchildren. The memo pad by the phone had the latest contact numbers, even the fridge was covered with mementos of her beloved family. Her home was filled with treasured family keepsakes. An embroidered family tree and a wooden plaque for each grandchild were cherished. Bodgie was known by her many friends for her kindness, her stylish looks, her skill at the game of curling, and her love of bingo. Her characteristic Gaelic Gasp and “Holy Ol Sailors” were often heard. Bodgie loved to feed people! Whether it was family meals, baking and sharing her famous scotch cookies or volunteering with “Meals on Wheels”, you never went hungry. An ice cream sandwich for breakfast was perfectly fine as long you were eating something. Bodgie loved to be outdoors and shared her love of nature with her family. Whether it was cross country skiing at The Enclosure or swimming at Oak Point, her enthusiasm for the outdoors was infectious. She would often encourage her children to “Go outside and let the wind blow the stink off” as she understood the value of connecting with nature. Bodgie loved animals! She had many cats and dogs through her life including 2 Golden Retrievers (both affectionately named Rafferty). A parishioner of St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, Fabiola was a spiritual woman of faith and was blessed with a beautiful and full life and will be dearly missed by all who knew her. The family extends a heartfelt Thank you to the staff of the Northwest Wing at Bridgeview Hall for their love, compassion, and care. Funeral Mass will be held at St. Samuel’s Catholic Church, Douglastown, for immediate family. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of your choice. Messages of condolence for the family can be sent through the funeral home website at www.bellsmedowas.com Funeral arrangements are under the care of Bell’s Funeral Home, 651 King George Highway, Miramichi, NB Telephone: 622-3600 A tradition of service since 1922. | RYAN, Fabiola Elizabeth (I12035)

1535 | Obituary: Hargrove, Basil Kenneth - Age 72 , of Melbourne, Australia passed away peacefully in Darwin, Australia on October 26, 2023. Basil was born and raised in Bath, New Brunswick, Canada. He was the loving son of Bernard and Polly (Giberson) Hargrove, loving father to Josh, Sommer and Jana, loving father in law and good friend to Ania and Adrian, loving grandfather to Ethan, Ned, Lily, John and Sophie and loving brother to Gregor (deceased), Jennifer, Gus, Hilery, Jaye, Larry, Cheryl (deceased), Jeff, Darren, Heidi and Jill. Basil was successful in most of the things he did in life. He brought a unique energy and passion to his endeavors which made them seem effortless and enjoyable. Even in high school we could see the accomplishments that would define his life. Basil lived a full life, filled with adventures that he shared with friends and family. And as a result, was widely loved and respected. He cherished his small town roots from growing up near the Monquart stream and continued to appreciate all the good things and good people who came into his life. He made the most of every opportunity that life provided and never waited until they landed in his lap. Basil sought out new challenges and new destinations and remained energized by constant learning. As a teenager he was involved with the small businesses that Bernard and Polly developed, including a private hydroelectric dam. Basil was a gifted athlete with significant accomplishments, most notably in track and field and basketball. He set provincial records for high jump and pole vault, with his age group’s provincial pole vault record unbroken for more than 40 years. He and Marilyn Gould, his high school sweetheart, married as teenagers and they raised three wonderful children together. He was the valedictorian of his graduating class of Bath High School, graduated from the University of New Brunswick and York University, where he completed his Master’s degree in Business Administration. He applied his education and enjoyed a long, successful career with McCain Foods, which began in Canada and eventually led him to become the Managing Director responsible for McCain’s operations in the Asia Pacific region. Basil and his family transferred from Canada to Australia with McCain Foods, settling first in Ballarat before relocating to Melbourne. Among his many business accomplishments with McCain’s, Basil oversaw the construction of new factories, acquisitions of other business and substantial organic business growth before his retirement in 2006. Basil was an eternal optimist. Any lemon that life gave him was just a little bit of work away from being the most delicious lemonade. Basil was diagnosed with a life threatening illness in 2020 and he handled it the way he handled everything in his life. He learned about the illness, he planned how he would manage it to the best of his ability, he involved his family whom he loved so dearly, and he continued to make plans so that everyday could be as meaningful as he envisioned it should be. He tackled that diagnosis with energy and determination. When treatment options were exhausted, he continued to run his race as well as he could. He enjoyed every possible moment with his family and shared his adventures and adventurous spirit with his children and grandchildren. Basil could not have been prouder of his family and grand children. Basil died while on a new adventure. He was travelling to the Northern Territory of Australia with his daughter Jana and was busy enjoying life and planning new adventures until the very end. We loved Basil. We loved the way he participated in our lives, the way we laughed with him. We admired him. We respected him. We will miss him very much. A memorial service will be arranged in Melbourne in the coming weeks. https://www.gibersonfuneraldirectors.ca/obituaries/173405 | HARGROVE, Basil Kenneth (I18197)

1552 | Obituary: It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Leroy Avril Davenport at his residence in Kilburn, NB on September 15, 2022, after a lengthy battle with cancer. Leroy was surrounded by his loving family and peacefully went home to be with his Lord and Savior. Leroy was born on March 28, 1936, in Bristol, NB. As a young child, Leroy worked alongside his grandfather plowing and harrowing the fields, planting crops, cutting hay and wood. He drove a team of horses at the tender age of ten. Leroy recalled seeing pavement for the very first time at the age of twelve and was thrilled the first time he saw electric lights when power came to Holmesville in 1949. He was amazed how quickly the lights turned on when he turned on the switch. When he completed his responsibilities as home, he would help a neighbor on his farm cutting pulp and planting crops for twenty-five cents a day. From the age of 12 to 20 years of age, Leroy worked at the school as a janitor, farm hand for Willy Barrett and woods worker for Crabbe’s Lumber. At the age of twenty, Leroy started working on the Beachwood Dam and was thrilled to have earned $1.00 per hour. At the age of 22, Leroy married the mother of his children, Ruth Greer from Fosterville. Leroy and Ruth were blessed with five children but suffered the loss of a infant daughter shortly after birth. The Davenport family settled in Holmesville and raised their family. Leroy was a wonderful husband and father and provided for his family. Leroy worked for Irving Oil for several years and was presented an opportunity to manage Linwood Giberson’s livestock farm and Leroy accepted. Working with Linwood provided an opportunity to gain experience to buy, sell and transport livestock and this experience set the groundwork for Leroy to move on to running his own Livestock Broker business later. In 1987, Leroy married Elizabeth Avery and they settled in Kilburn, NB. Leroy and his son Ronald bought a farm and developed the farm by building two houses, a barn, grainery and a shop. His business grew and he enjoyed farming, buying and selling livestock and he continued to work until his health declined. Leroy is predeceased by his mother, Verna Budrow, Stepfather Marshall Budrow, brother Donnie (Brenda), and sisters Stella and Loleta, infant daughter Pamela and grandson Jordan Gahan. Leroy is survived by his loving wife, Elizabeth, sister Shirley (Dyke) Denny and Sister-in-law Brenda. Born on July 9, 1947 in Glassville, NB to the late Vaughn and Audrey Davenport, he was the oldest boy in a family of nine children and was predeceased by his brother Ray. Our father was dedicated to his family who he loved and cared for dearly, never missing an opportunity to spend time together. Dad loved our mother with all his heart and in his final days he listed off several things he wanted done, all focused on protecting and providing for her. Dad showed his love in many ways, but his main focus was providing for his family with hard work and determination. In 2010, he retired following 30 years at the Irving Tree Nursery in Juniper and shortly after he began battling Mantel Cell Lymphoma. He will be remembered for his unwavering ability to be positive and determined to fight for 12 more years with his cherished grandchildren. A Dad that went out of his way to help someone. I am so proud to call him my Father and my Best Friend. Looking back; it’s hard to imagine Dad working full-time at McCain Foods Ltd. for 39 years, as well as working in the bakery with Mom and somehow, he never missed one of my hockey games, over the years. Later in life, he continued to support his family, by lending a helping hand; where and when needed. Or just be there to talk with, or ask for advice. The world was truly a better place, with him in it. “Grampy Mahlon!” Words can’t describe the love that he had for his Grandchildren. From the youngest to the oldest, they all want to be like Grampy. They all have the same big, loving, heart he had. They will forever cherish their time with him! Toiling at McCain Foods Canada, for 39 years; he retired at 55 to be with his First Love; as she fought her own battle with cancer. Then came his Second Love; Karen, with whom he enjoyed his retirement years. His 3rd loves, were all his dogs he had, though-out the years. He leaves behind his much spoiled, Min Pins; Allie and Jack, who miss their daily cuddles and treats. He loved working with wood and built his own home in 1981. It was his happy place and he was very content to stay at home. He was a quiet man, who lived a quiet life; in the place he most loved to be. A Celebration of Life; hosted by his son, Andy, will be held at the L. R. Giberson Directors, on September 09, 2023, between 1 p.m. until 3 p.m. All are welcome! He was renowned for his uncompromising integrity and his indefatigable work ethic. Even in retirement, he continued to go to his downtown office and provide sound advice and council. He was a financial services pioneer, introducing innovative new banking services to Canadians and expanding Scotiabank internationally. A proud Canadian, Cedric gave back to his country in many ways. He served on the boards of many corporate and philanthropic organizations. He was also a Fellow of the Institute of Canadian Bankers and was an inductee of the New Brunswick Business Hall of Fame. In 1981, he was made an Officer of the Order of Canada for his banking and commerce contributions. In recognition of his significant impact in Canadian business, Cedric received honorary degrees from St. Francis Xavier, Dalhousie, University of New Brunswick, Mount Allison and Queen's. In 1993, he was declared Business Man of the Year by the Harvard Business School Club of Toronto and Business Leader of the Year by the Western Business School of Toronto. He was elected to the Canadian Business Hall of Fame in 2000. Although golf was an aspiration, reading was a passion. As an avid student of history, politics and business, Cedric was never reluctant to inject a wry smile and a little humour into any discussion. Often publicly recognized for his successful career, Cedric was equally accomplished but very private in his dedication to those things most important to him. Cedric had a deep love for his family, for Canada (and the province of New Brunswick) and his faith. His family meant the world to him and he cherished every opportunity to share time together. He was always there to offer encouragement, congratulations or a kind word when events didn't go as planned. We will sorely miss him. The family will receive friends at the HUMPHREY FUNERAL HOME A.W. Today Mitchell, dad’s oldest grandson and I will share the life and times of John (JR) . When dad passed away this week my daughter Liana said “I thought he was going to live to be 100” and for all of here, 100 is one of those landmark numbers and my reply was “Grampy lived a long life, he has lived for over 33,000 days “and today Mitchell and I would like to reflect on few of these days. John was born on the family farm in Aroostook , Oct 8, 1918 the youngest of 10 children. He was a blonde tow head and I am sure an active child as are his grandchildren here today. His early days were spent working on the farm, roaming the woods and streams as well as learning to swim in the Saint John River. Dad was able to perform some of the best acrobatics in the water and he always created quite a stir with his underwater headstands. He enjoyed sports and was active playing baseball. As a teenager during the Great Depression , Dad was industrious with jobs working at Louis MacIver’s general store, or shovelling snow for 25 cents an hour. As with today times were challenging and the calling of young people to military service was a response to new opportunities. I was asked by my Grammy Demmings to say a few words at today’s service. It is my honour to do so. I have several thoughts that I would like to share with you today. The call to serve one’s own country drew many young Canadian to a land unknown. In the summer of 1940 at the age of 21 Grampy left his home town of Aroostook with his friend Wilmot Hanscome and hitch hiked to Saint John to enlist with the Saint John Fusiliers . Two years later in the summer of 1942 he left Halifax on the Athlone Castle for Liverpool, England and upon their arrival his troop joined the Cameron Highlanders of Ottawa. The next two years were spent in various parts of England. Grampy told us “One of the highlights of this time was our 48 hour leaves to London and the open pubs in every town.” Imagine a young man from a small village in New Brunswick riding the underground and seeing Buckingham Palace for the first time. For Remembrance Day 1997, Grampy wrote of his experience and here are his words: “Daylight was breaking as we left Southampton Port, on June 6, 1944. The wail of bagpipes sent a chill of excitement and fear through our bodies. We landed around noon on JUNO beach, many of the advance brigades left a scene of wounded and dead. We were part of the 9th brigade, stalemated briefly only to move on assist in the capture Carpiquet airport. The combined allied forces of the Canadians, British and Americans saw the reclaiming of France.” He felt a close connection with the Dutch as he spent the winter of 1944-45 living in Holland in a doctor’s home without heat, as they did not want to indicate any presence of human habitation. During the period of liberation Grampy travelled throughout France, Belgium and Holland. After May 5th, 1945 his remaining days in Europe were spent distributing food and assisting people to return to their home countries. Grampy rarely spoke of the war, but he did mention something that I remember distinctly. He once told a story of being in a foxhole during a combat operation. Somehow he said that he was run over by a tank while he was in the hole. Obviously he lived to tell the story. After the war, Grampy was fortunate to return to Europe three more times to commemorate the end of WWII. He mentioned visiting the Groesbeek cemetery and tracing his previous path in Europe. In 1995, he proudly returned once again in order to attend the 50th anniversary of the end of WWII. He returned one more time in 1999 to France to commemorate the new monument in Caen. I also have fond memories of being able to have participated in the Remembrance Day ceremonies here in Perth Andover in years past, along with Grampy. Although I have never known the scourge of war, it was a proud moment to be able to wear my Customs uniform, while he was in his Legion uniform finished off with his medals. I remember attending the evening remembrance celebrations as well. Grampy was a proud soldier and a very proud Canadian. Once Dad returned to Canada on the ocean liner Queen Elizabeth he was offered a job with the Canadian Pacific Railway. His name appeared on the seniority list next to his nephew Clifford and John Pelrine. He initially was a brakeman and later a conductor. Oh how we loved to go down to the caboose and sit up in the cubicle and look out over the train yard , in later years Dad enjoyed doing the same in the dome car of the VIA train. The CPR was a large part of Dad’s life for the next 37 years. The largest part of dad’s life was mum. The story goes that while visiting his brother Wendell and wife Lorna that he spotted the young teacher with the dark hair at the school adjacent to their home. Mum tricked him and left for Plaster Rock to teach for a year- that must have jumpstarted him to ask him to marry her and in October 1949 they were married. They shared this special beginning with Uncle Irvine and Aunt Edna. Dad quickly became a big part of the Millie family and has played the role of big brother and father to mum’s siblings. As we know marriage is work and over the years Mum and Dad were the best of friends, they agreed to disagree. Many of the heated discussions between them would scare many a stranger but became the banter of a long relationship. Mum and Dad were married 60 years ago this past fall and we were fortunate to have so many family members with us as to celebrate their anniversary Thanksgiving Day weekend. Our early family years were spent in Aroostook. This gave us the opportunity to play with numerous cousins, hear stories from our extended family on the front lawn and glassed in porch which overlooked the then Trans Canada Highway. When Dad got the call to go to work we would know how long he would be based on the trip. We would inquire where are you going and Dad would tell us Edmundston, McAdam, Presque Isle and Plaster Rock. Of course Mum who is famous for packing “the bucket” would plan accordingly. I can still see the small tin can for short trips and the bigger than a bread basket can for those overnight trips. Dad sure loved Mums cooking.... Dad and Mum taught us to appreciate the outdoors, we had many family trips camping and we laugh about the time he ignited the mantels of the kerosene heater near Quebec City. Packing up the kids and heading off with our huge tent and gear for the whole family must have taken a lot of patience as we took off on our camping holidays. Many weekends were spent fishing or hunting -of course Brent and I were always falling in the brook and getting wet and he would curse us but always come to our rescue. I’ll also let you in on a little secret- Brent didn’t enjoy cleaning fish or partridge so I would always get the job as Dad’s assistant. We had frequent trips to Ottawa to visit Dad’s mother and sisters, which began to develop our understanding of Canada and open the world to the little kids from Aroostook. One of the benefits of working for the railroad was the travel pass and Mum and Dad would take the train whenever an opportunity rose, to EXPO ‘67, across Canada in 1977..... In 1992 they joined me in a trip to the California, where dad was thrilled riding on the trolley cars of San Francisco , followed by a train trip along the west coast to Vancouver. I always liked how Grampy was occasionally referred to as JR . Referring to him as “JR” seemed to me to be straight to the point and had an air or respectfulness to it. That is how I would describe my grandfather. I would also describe him as a man with a sense of humour and a strong work ethic. I will always remember Grampy as being an independent and healthy individual who always was never shy about sharing his opinion on any number of topics. Sometimes you didn’t need to ask! When together we would chat about the day’s politics and sports events that were happening. He was always very engaged in current events and would follow the hockey games closely. Dad was an avid sports fan and many weekends were spent watching Brent play hockey and ball, as well as his favourite sports teams on television. I swear he could make most plays from his chair and was a true Canadian hockey fan. While our big sister Debbie was growing up, she had the “boys” coming to call most weekends. Rumour has it that Dad scared many away but not Norman who joined our family in 1970. Debbie and Norman married in 1971 and today they are here with their children Mitchell and Jill as well as Dad’s great grandchildren Samuel, Meredith and our newest addition to the next generation Adison. I have some early memories of spending time at Grammy and Grampy’s camp in Riley Brook. Although I don’t recall the stories I’ve heard of me riding my toy duck down the dirt road, I remember later events such as Grampy splitting wood and moving lots of topsoil in the very early mornings. There were times when he would indicate very clearly and very early in the day that it was my time to get up out of bed and help do the same. Looking back now, he must have been in his 70’s and I remember him being the picture of health. He never complained about the need for hard work and always had his tasks completed. I also have other very fond memories of time at the camp, especially when he would take me out for a ride in his large river canoe. I would be responsible for providing the lookout at the front of the canoe and alert him to the rocks ahead, so he could alter his path. I would look back and see him standing at the rear, masterfully manoeuvring his canoe around the river, based on my advice. He really seemed to be the admiral of his ship to me at that time. It was only years later, when I asked to borrow the same canoe and travel on the same river that I was able to truly appreciate the skill necessary to manoeuvre such a long and heavy brute. I gained a little more respect for Grampy that day. I also have memories of watching the federal election, probably in 1993 at the camp. Grammy and Grampy had a satellite dish there, which I thought was a marvellous thing to have. The results were still coming in from across the country and around midnight I heard a blast from the bedroom, indicating in so many words, that it was time to turn the television off. Brent’s family joined Dad in his later years and Joyce quickly became another of Dad’s girls, sharing a common work ethic and believing no task is too hard. They worked on many projects together around the house and camp. They have been at the house daily for Dad for the past twenty five years. Dustin and Dave, it’s hard to believe he would let you mow the lawn or shovel as my recollection is that he was always itching to get outside and take care of his yard. Never to do things in a conventional way Mike appeared in our life in 1996. Dad enjoyed spending time at the Old Mill and watched the house change over the years. He and Mum were at the airport when Hiew and I arrived from Malaysia in June, 2001. He would push Hiew up and down the driveway swatting the mosquitoes away from the little baby. He was there once again when we moved backed to Connecticut being my main babysitter for Liana as we moved into our new house. Liana was with Dad last week, shared a few chocolates, sat on his bed and held his hand. In the past few days, I’ve thought about the many historical events that Grampy would have experienced during a life of 91 years. Many wars have been fought. Countries have been born. Babe Ruth scored his home run record, the Great Depression took place, the colour television was invented, and the space program allowed humankind to travel outside of this world, the Civil Rights movement took place and the fall of the Iron Curtain. Communication around the world, in most form, is now instantaneous. Travel around the globe is now measured in hours. It is simply incredible the changes that Grampy was able to experience. The last time I spoke with Grampy in Fredericton, which was a few weeks ago, he was being cared for by a nurse who had come to Canada from Hungary. I listened to him tell her of his time in Europe and the places he had seen. He asked me if I would like to go to Europe with him one more time, I think with his typical mischievous humour. I said I would love to, but at this stage in his life, he said it with a smirk, knowing it probably wasn’t possible. Samuel While preparing this eulogy, my son asked me what I was doing. I explained to him that I was writing down some things that I remembered about Grampy John and I asked what he remembered. Samuel , who is 6 years old, says he remembers Grampy John mowing the grass for us at his house Perth. That means that Grampy in his late 80’s, still getting the things done that needed to be done. Finally Samuel wanted to say “I love Grampy John”. Please let’s remember and celebrate the life of John Demmings. Rest in Peace Grampy. Thank you. ********************************************************************8 | DEMMINGS, John Randolph (I5061)

1595 | Obituary: Pauline Lavery (née Boyd) passed away peacefully on October 14th, 2023, surrounded by her loving family. Pauline was born on February 23rd, 1938, in Johnville, New Brunswick, as the youngest of nine siblings. Her early years were marked by long walks to school, early mornings milking cows, potato picking; and fostering her lifelong love of music by learning to play the piano from the nuns at St. John the Evangelist Church. After graduating from Bath Regional High School in 1955, Pauline pursued her passion for education and became a teacher. Her teaching career led her to Calgary, where she crossed paths with her future husband of 58 years, Alex. Pauline taught with the Calgary Catholic School District and as her family grew, she continued as a guest teacher. She later shifted to a role in Human Resources with the Calgary Health Region until she retired. Above all, Pauline's greatest joy was her family. She was a dedicated sister, wife, mother, and grandmother. When not at home, she found solace in her faith as a devout Catholic, actively participating at Holy Spirit Parish. Pauline is survived by her loving husband, Alex, her cherished children, Jim (Marianne Bunker), Kate (Kevin Masters), Paul (Kyla Lavery), and Jenn (Ian Fero). Her memory lives on through her eight adoring grandchildren - Jakob, Tyler, Kyle, Alexandra, Brendan, Joel, Lukas, and Rachel. 1599 | Obituary: ROCHENSKI, Barbara Mary July 12, 1929 - October 2, 2017 We are saddened to announce the passing of Barbara Krochenski, the morning of Monday, October 2, 2017 in Calgary at the Bow View Manor at the age of 88 years. Barbara was born on July 12, 1929, the fifth in a family of nine, three boys and six girls, to Cloud and Gertrude Boyd at the family home with no running water, telephone, or electricity in Johnville, Carleton County, New Brunswick. Barbara attended one room school houses up until high school, which she did by correspondence, then boarding in Newcastle, NB, for grade 11. Next was teacher's college in Fredericton. Barbara taught in one room school houses close to home for four and a half years, then William's Lake, BC, for two years, and Manitoulin Island for one more year for the Department of Indian Affairs. Finally, she ended up in Calgary at the Separate School Board at Sacred Heart and Holy Name schools. Teaching is how she met Walter, who was an accountant with the school board, whom she married on August 19, 1961 in the Church of St. John the Evangelist, Johnville and settled in Calgary, raising five children. They were married over 50 years before his passing. Barbara was also predeceased by, her sisters Maddie Logue (Johnny) and Helen Barry (Ronnie); brothers Basil (Teresa), Sam (Betty), and Arnold (Cecelia); and granddaughter Emily Guest.
