1432 | Obituary: The McIntosh family in Glassville (Carleton Co.) were deeply affected when on Saturday the 6th the sad intelligence reached them of the drowning while stream-driving of James GILLESPIE, nephew of Alexander McINTOSH, Robert McINTOSH and John McINTOSH, a promising young man, 21 years of age, who with a brother and three sisters, had been left an orphan 15 years ago, father and mother dying within a few months of each other. ... There were of course different flying reports as to the precise circumstances of James Gillespie's death. This version which your correspondent had from a lady, a connection by marriage of the deceased, seems to be the correct one, although possibly there may be some slight descrepancies even in it. James Gillespie was working on a bridge at Rumford Falls, Maine. On the 4th May, returning home from his work, he crossed a canal on a boom, preceded by a companion who was a short distance ahead. In some way or other in walking along the boom, he lost his footing and was precipitated into the canal, struggeled and sank. His friend missing him returned along the boom and reached the spot of the accident just as the body for a few moments came to the surface. He succeeded in laying hold of it and (with the help of others perhaps) dragged it from the water and had it conveyed to their boarding place. Professional assistance was immediately called in and two medical gentleman, after working away hard for a couple of hours, and applying all the usual restoratives, succeeded in restoring animation and bringing their patient back to life. For two days he hovered between life and death, succumbing to a severe attack of pneumonia. James Gillespie's remains were brought to Bristol by railway train on the morn of the 6th. They were forwarded to Glassville and in the eve. consigned to thie last resting place in our cemetery. Previous to interment an impressive service was held in the Presbyterian church. Rev. Fiske of Greenfield officiated. Date May 20 1893 County Carleton Place Woodstock Newspaper Carleton Sentinel Daniel F. Johnson : Volume 85 Number 2082 | GILLESPIE, James A. (I10821)

1473 | Obituary: Viola, better known to her family and friends as “Vi” died peacefully at Riverview Manor in Bath on September 1, 2020 at the age of 98. Viola was born on August 6th , 1922 in West Glassville, NB to her parents Ted and Alice (Sweeney) Brewer who predeceased her. She was predeceased by her first husband, John (Jack) Salthouse and her second husband Forest William (Bill) Dean. Her siblings, Bessie Fouch (Clarence), Annie Rediker (Don), and Marjorie Lamont (Ken) predeceased her as well as her stepfather, Billy Banks and her sister, Kay Banks and her brother, Jack Banks. She is survived by her daughter, Elaine White and her husband, Bob, her grandson, Michael White and his wife Gaynell and her great grandchildren Carlie, and twins, Nicholas and Madison. As well, her Sister, Jessie McKimm (Harold) and her many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Viola and Jack were married in West Glassville in 1940. Two years after Elaine was born, they moved to Shaunavon, Saskatchewan where Jack worked in a galvanizing tire company for three years. They returned to New Brunswick and lived in West Glassville where Jack worked at Alec McIntosh’s Mill in Kenneth. The family moved to Bristol in 1948 and Jack began working at the Bristol Woodworking Factory. Viola worked for the Somervilles and worked at the Cherrio Restaurant in Bristol. She went to work at Marich’s Country Store in Bristol where she worked in the clothing and china department which she enjoyed immensely. She loved clothing and serving the customers for over 25 years. She spent a few years working at Phillip’s Home Hardware, however she missed working with clothing and went to work at Buckingham’s Department Store in Florenceville. She ended her working career when Jack became ill and she stayed at home to take care of him. Viola liked to travel. She and Jack were fortunate that they were able to travel to England to visit his family in Kirkham. Later they travelled back to England and visited the rest of Europe with friends. They also visited Florida several times where Vi enjoyed the hot weather. After Jack passed away, Viola continued to take several trips with her close friend, Felicia Logue. They took bus tours in the United States and Canada as well as driving to Ontario and other short adventures. Her favorite was their trip to Bermuda. Vi visited her sister, Bessie and her family in Wooster, Ohio. It was on one of her trips that she met Bill Dean. Bill was a bachelor and eventually they decided to get married on June 24, 1994. and settle down in Wooster. They visited Bristol every summer especially for family events such as when Michael and Gaynell were married and when her great grandchildren were born. Bill and Vi had been married for 17 years when he passed away on May 31,2011. Vi then returned to live in New Brunswick to be near her family. She lived in Brennan’s apartments in Florenceville for two years. At that time Dr. Marco thought that she should not live alone. She then moved in with Elaine and Bob in Bristol where she lived for the last seven years. Vi enjoyed living near Michael and his family. She dearly loved Michael and enjoyed having the opportunity to see her great grand children grow up. Vi led a very active social life. She loved quilting at Annie Greens with her friends, UCW meetings, Seniors Club, Bridge Club on Thursdays as well as Tim Hortons every Tuesday at 2:30 PM with her social group of ladies. She enjoyed going to the Beechwood Baptist Church who cater to seniors each month. She loved the music they shared. She attended church at Faith Memorial United Church and loved her church family. When Covid-19 arrived things changed greatly for her as it did for everyone. As her dementia was getting more severe, her understanding of what was happening became greater. No longer could she enjoy her social gatherings and although her physical health was wonderful for her 98 years, her mind was fleeting away. The family want to thank VI’s many friends who helped her. Betty Davenport and Annie Green who always took her to Tim’s and church every Sunday, Sandra McIntosh who took her to Seniors each month and Krista Drost at Spoil Me who continued to do her hair each week, and Kim Brooks as well as looking after Bob watched Mum carefully when I was not home. Also a special thanks to the nurses and staff of River View Manor for their care shown to Vi during her stay there. Funeral arrangements are with L.R. Giberson Funeral Directors 207 Burnham Rd. Florenceville-Bristol. There will be no Funeral Service, however visiting hours will be Friday, September 4, 2020 from 7 to 9 PM from the funeral home. 1490 | Obituary: With broken hearts, we are saddened to announce the passing of our beloved mother, Marion Irene DeMerchant, in her own home in Beechwood, NB on Monday, January 23, 2023. Marion was born on December 2, 1930 in Upper Kent, NB as the first child of the late George and Adelaide (Broad) Giberson. She was also predeceased by her husband, Avery DeMerchant, 42 years this August, sister, Loretta Beulah Cox, and son-in-law George Levensailor. Marion is survived by her 3 children: Linda Levensailor, Joanne DeMerchant (Robert), and Susan Crompton. Special girls, Carol Cox and Twyla Harvey. 6 precious Grandchildren: Bobbi Jo DeMerchant, Robyn (Clint) DeMerchant, Aaron (Allison) Levensailor, Janelle (Ryan Rayner) DeMerchant, Brooks (Chloe) Crompton, and Lauren Crompton. 6 beloved Great Grandchildren: Jordyn (Myles Romaine) and Kaine DeMerchant, Jacob and Lucas Haynes, Avery Bolland, Adelaide and Aiden Levensailor, Forrest and Asher Crompton. 2 adored Great Great Grandchildren: Willow and Grey Romaine. Siblings: Lawrence (Thelma) Giberson and Marie Giberson along with a long host of in-laws, nieces, nephews, and extended family. Marion, being the eldest of child of her family, took on the role of caregiver as a young child and from housework to farm work, she was a Jill of all trades. Marion managed the administrative part of Avery’s Plumbing and Electrical Company. She enjoyed working in retailed at Buckingham Department Store, Gaunce’s Grocery Store, and Susan’s clothing store the Split Image by providing advice to many satisfied customers and the youth in the community. She loved caring for her family, her home and excelled at cooking, baking, forever wheeling a paint brush, and tending to her flower garden and plants. The path that connected her home to her sister’s made her a second mom to a village and she was loved by many more. She cared for her father at the end of his life and was a force in Lauren’s successes. Her grandchildren, and their children loved being the apples of her eye. Under her crisply pressed white blouses and pearls was the backbone of a strong and determined life force. She bared her losses and pain with great fortitude. Our loss is great and felt near and far away. We take comfort in knowing that she is reunited with her loved ones in the sky and wish her a swift journey on the wings of her snow-white dove. The DeMerchant family wish to give special thanks to Marion’s Angel, “Hallelujah, Thank you, Jesus, you’re here,” Lori McDougall from Kindred Care. For the exceptional care by Cynthia Paddock, her palliative nurse, from New Brunswick Extra-Mural Program. Amy Goodfellow, from Kindred Care, for her industrious cleaning during weekend relief. Dr. Colin Lockart for his medical care over many years, when she could finally be convinced that a broken bone was serious enough for an emergency visit. Visitation will be held at the L.R. Giberson Funeral Home in Florenceville, N.B. on Sunday, January, 29, 2023, from 1-3pm followed by Marion’s Celebration of life at 3:30 pm. The interment will be at the Mineral Cemetery in the Spring. For those who wish, donations may be made to the DunRoamin’ Stray and Rescue or the charity of the donor’s choice. L.R. Giberson Funeral Directors are entrusted with the arrangements. “Fear Not-” Isaiah 41:10 https://www.gibersonfuneraldirectors.ca/obituaries/168039 | GIBERSON, Marion Irene (I17413)

1491 | Obituary: With great gratitude for the gift of her life, the family of Iva Jones announces her passing on August 4, 2022; she died in St. Stephen, NB, where she had shared a home with her daughter since December of 2019. Iva was born in Debec, NB on November 2, 1928 to the late William and Claudine (Campbell) Wheeler. She is survived by her children, Lorna Jones of St. Stephen, NB, Phillip (Marie) Jones of Quispamsis, NB, and Jennifer (Brian) Simcoe of Stouffville, ON; her grandchildren, Kayla (Michael) Yorston, Luke (Gracie) Simcoe and Tyler Simcoe, and her great granddaughter, Andie Yorston. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Iva was predeceased by her husband, Olin Eldon Jones, her sisters, Anna, Clara, Zula, Minnie, Janet and Viola, and her brothers, Harold, Orval, Edgar, Leonard and John. Following her graduation from Broadway High School in Woodstock, Iva began her nurses’ training at the Victoria Public Hospital in Fredericton. During this time, she was courted by her sweetheart, Olin, whom she had met following his return from service in England and Germany at the end of WW2. Olin and Iva were married in July of 1952, and established their home on “Kelly Hill” where they raised their children and were an integral part of the community. Iva continued her nursing career for a few years, and then served occasionally as a private duty nurse, assisting a number of wee folk to come into the world! Iva was strong in her faith, and active at Woodstock Baptist Church all of her adult life. She gave leadership in children’s programs such as Awana, and in various roles with the Jean Quigg Rushton Guild, alongside women who became lifelong friends and partners in the Gospel. As well, for many years part of each summer was spent serving faithfully at Shiktehawk as camp nurse while Olin led the craft activities. She was also a creative spirit, and was seldom without a project, be it sewing, knitting, toll painting, furniture upholstery or quilting. And oh, the goodies that came from her kitchen; pie every day for Olin (his favourite:), bread, doughnuts, cookies, pickles, jam… Iva delighted in her three grandchildren, and was never happier than when they converged at the house on Jules Drive for summer holiday- helping Nanny make her famous strawberry jam, camping in the backyard and just having fun together. Despite failing health in the last years of her life, Iva retained her ‘spunkiness’, quick wit and great sense of humour, and kept cheering on those Toronto sports teams! We will miss her…yet rejoice that she is with the Lord, and reunited with Olin, hers sisters and brothers, and the friends who have been waiting for her in Heaven. Iva is resting at The Culberson Funeral Home, 188 Connell Street, Woodstock, NB. Visitation is on Monday, August 22 at 10:00 am, funeral service at 11:00 from The Culberson Memorial Chapel with Rev. Leonard Cousins officiating, and interment at the Woodstock Rural Cemetery, Houlton Street, Woodstock, NB. Face masks are required at the visitation and the funeral service. Following the interment, family and friends are invited to return to the Funeral Home for a reception and continued time of celebrating Iva’s life. If so desired, donations in memory of Iva may be made to Covenant House Toronto (hhtps://covenanthousetoronto.ca/), Woodstock Baptist Church (https://woodstockbaptist.ca/) or Charlotte County Cancer Society (https://charlottecountycancer.org/).
