13 | "The first church has been built and is being used and a new cemetery acquired. There have been deaths in the community. The first to die was John Mcintosh, in 1866. He left a young widow and two small boys. He was only 45 years of age. He was buried on his homestead pending the establishing of a cemetery. He was reinterred in the GlassviUe Cemetery in 1926. John Ritchie was the first to be interred in the new cemetery in February 1868. He was 31 years of age and left a young wife. The next young man to succumb was Thomas Allan who died in April 1873 leaving a young wife and small children" A History of the Glassville Settlement, page 12 Thomas brought his young wife, Elizabeth, with him. A History of the Glassville Settlement, page 46 Thomas Allan remained on the homestead, clearing land and "making a farm". Four children were born, two sons and two daughters. Thomas Allan died in 1873. The youngest daughter was given the name Thomasina, generally shortened to Ina. She may have been born after her father died. William Curry, born in Ireland, settled in GlassviUe on Lot 54, Range 2. His first wife, Agnes, was born in Scotland. Eight children were born of this union. Agnes Curry died in 1887, when her youngest child was nine years old. 53 | Alfred traveled to Boston with the family of Ellen and her husband Richard Port, arriving in 1861 bound for New Brunwick. He may have settled initially in Woodstock with his sister, and in Glassville two years later. According to "A History of The Glassville Settlement", Alfred Dexter (Ellen Port's brother), came to Glassville and was granted a lot not far north of the Port homestead. However, it appears he didn't stay long as he appears in the 1881 census as a laborer in Dumfries, York County. It appears he then returned to Englland, and died in 1898. | DEXTER, Alfred (I13796)

54 | Annie Waite Stebbins, born 1872 in West Springfield, Massachusetts, married Chas. A. Wells in Victory, Essex, Vermont, November 12, 1890. She subsequently married Hugh Joyner Lamont of West Glassville. Annie died in Bath, New Brunswick, October 5, 1946, some seven years after the death of her husband, and was interred with him in Glassville United Church cemetery. ****************** “The following is the story of Anne Waite Stebbins Wells Lamont, whose heritage grand piano was recently repatriated to its roots in New Brunswick. In October, the Lamont family of Mapleton and South Portland, Maine transported the piano to Kings Landing by truck and placed it in the care of curator Darrell Butler. Anne was born in West Springfield, Mass. On September, 1872. In the early part of 1873 her father was killed in a train accident and soon after her mother moved to Vermont. After a period of time and getting acquainted her mother would remarry and soon three more children would be part of Anne’s world. It became very clear at an early age that Ann would be attractive, multi-talented, aggressive and liberated (as we understand it today) before the word was invented. In her early teens she learned to play the organ, piano, lap harp and five-stringed banjo. She also took art lessons dealing primarily with oils and by her late teens would become an accomplished artist and musician. Her personality, art and playing music at church, community gatherings and with local bands would contribute to her being well known and very popular wherever she lived. Anne was married in the early 1890s and divorced a few years later, which at that time was unheard of. In the late 1890s she would remarry and move to West Glassville, N.B. Canada for a short time. After a year she returned to Vermont and around 1912 would return to Canada, the birthplace of her husband. Throughout her life she was extremely outspoken and demanded her rightful place in a so-called man’s world. She would continue to be greatly respected as a musician, artist, people person and a good judge of horses. Her J. Blackhurst piano is of the 1835 era handcrafted in Scotland. It was shipped to Saint John N.B. by sail cargo boat. It was transferred to a steamboat, travelling up the St. John River to Woodstock N.B. A few years later the piano was moved to a horse drawn flatboat continuing north on the river to Bristol and over land by two wheel ox cart to Glassville. The survived a hose fire a few years later and was moved to the West Glassville area until 1949 when it was taken to Maine where it remained until its final journey to King’s Landing. Her five-stringed banjo was in the 1850 era also. A charcoal color portrait of Anne was done in the early 1900s. Anne was an artist, and did oil paintings in the 1890s and early 1900s. Her banjo, paintings, piano, portrait and other personal items were moved to Maine in 1949. Anne was greatly respected as a spiritual person and in the early years had come from a cultured background of the arts. She found it very difficult to adjust to the life style of rural Canada. Three years after the death of her husband in 1939 Anne would receive a proposal of marriage, however at the age of 70, up front and honest, told her wealthy suitor of her divorce in the 1890s, she was dropped like a hot coal which was not a problem to her. Upon her death on October 5, 1946 she was buried beside the sweetheart of her life in Hugh Joyner Lamont at a Glassville cemetery.” The preceding was published Friday November 12, 2004, The Bugle-Observer, Woodstock, N.B. | STEBBINS, Annie Waite (I10882)

58 | Barbara R. Tompkins 1923-2020 It is with sadness that the family of Barbara Tompkins, formerly of Stickney and Florenceville, announces her passing on June 5. For the past few years Barbara has been a resident of Paradise Villa, Douglas, N.B. Barbara was born in West Glassville, the fourth daughter of Agnes E. (Simpson) and Gordon M. Laing. She will be lovingly remembered by her daughter Jean (Andrew) Martell and her son Clayton (Judy), plus nine grandchildren: Tim Martell, Duncan Martell, Heidi Helbrecht, Heather Russo, Nathan Tompkins, Troy Tompkins, Cassandra McParlan, Kimberly Inglis and Matthew Tompkins and several great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She is survived by her old sister Jennie Giberson. She was predeceased by her husband Howard and son Malcolm, her parents, plus four brothers and three sisters. Barbara left home as a teenager to work in Bristol and Stickney. She and Howard were married on July 5, 1941. When Howard was discharged from the army in 1945 they took up residence in Stickney. They later purchased the Cheerio Motel and Dairy Bar in Florenceville and operated it for several years. After Howard’s passing, she moved to Fredericton. Barbara kept an immaculate home and was an incredible cook. She loved to bake and her grandchildren were often the happy recipients of the dozens of cookies and other sweets she made over the years. She also enjoyed her flower garden, collecting antiques, and cross border shopping trips. She is especially remembered for her work ethic. The family is appreciative of the compassionate care that Paradise Villa staff and management provided. A “special thank you” to Dr. Will Stymiest for his visits to Paradise Villa and follow-up phone calls regarding our mother’s health. Flowers are gratefully declined. If desired, donations in her memory may be made to Hunter’s Cemetery or the Alzheimer Society of New Brunswick or a charity of your choosing. Due to current Covid-19 restrictions, a private interment service has taken place and a memorial service will be held later. L.R. Johnson : Volume 101 Number 1796 Date August 1 1896 County Carleton Place Woodstock Newspaper Carleton Sentinel In Memorium - John MILLIE, born at Monimail, Fifeshire, Scotland, July 13th 1815. Died at Glassville, N.B. Canada July 13th, 1896, Aged 81 years. - It was only a year ago that we followed the remains of the late Mrs. John Millie to the grave - wife of the deceased. The late John Mills received an excellent common school education. He spent the earlier part of his life in various pusuits, in all of which he displayed that indominable industry and sterling integrity which laid the foundations of the honorable independence to which he afterwards arose. He was united in marriage, in due course, to his late wife, Isabella BAIN, daughter of the late Peter BAIN of Leslie and niece of Sir William BAIN, R.N. The fruit of this union was three children, the two eldest of whom died in Scotland. With his wife and youngest child, Peter Bain MILLIE, now married in Glassville and accountant to Timothy LYNCH, one of our largest provincial lumber merchants, he came to New York in 1853. The family remained in the States till 1859 when they came to Westmorland, N.B., where deceased was engaged in the service of the Westmorland Olive Freestone Co. Thence they removed to Glassville in June 1861 where deceased engaged in farming and was long considered an agriculturist of excellent standing, residing on his farm until the day of his death. Reared in the old country to the doctrines of the Presbyterian church, he continued faithful to the last. The remains of the deceased were consigned to the grave in the family burying ground now enclosed with a fine iron fence in Glassville cemetery, Wednesday 15th, Rev. J.K. Beairsto and Rev. J.
