    Notes:

    Inscription
    JOHN DeMERCHANT
    who died
    Sept. 4th. 1867.
Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints.

While the headstone does say John was 87 Years old there is reason to believe otherwise. First, on July 21st, 1792 there was a John Cufman baptized at the Maugerville (pronounced Majorville) NB, Anglican Church. (Pg. 30 of MAC records). Second, included in an 1814 land grant petition, a John DeMerchant Jr says he is 22 years old, or birth year of 1792. Third, the top of this tombstone is broken off. It is impossible to say 100% for sure but this stone may have been erected years after his death and his age -as noted- may have been estimated by one of his children or grandchildren. If you do the simple math of 1867 subtract 87 that gives a birth year of 1780. This would be during the American Revolutionary war which lends doubt to the validity of the date because his mother would have been approximately 10 years old.

John DeMerchant, son of John Cuffman/DeMerchant, was married March 1st, 1815 at the British Military Post in modern day Connell, Carleton County, NB to Levina Jinson.

John was only a Canadian for the last two months of his life. His 80 +/- other years were as a British subject in the Colony of New Brunswick.

John married Levina GINSON on 1 Mar 1815 in Connell, Carleton, New Brunswick, Canada. Levina was born before 1800 in Unknown; died after 1871 in Unknown; was buried in Pomphrey Cemetery ?, Wicklow, Carleton, New Brunswick, Canada. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 3.  Levina GINSON was born before 1800 in Unknown; died after 1871 in Unknown; was buried in Pomphrey Cemetery ?, Wicklow, Carleton, New Brunswick, Canada.

    Notes:

    Notes (Norman DeMerchant)

There is no marker for Levina but she would have been buried close to her husband John. If you examine the headstone of John it has certainly had the top of it broken off. Where Levina died after her husband - post 1871 Canadian census - her name may have been on the upper portion.

In Vaughan DeMerchant's book he suggests that this stone was moved to its current location during the construction of the Beechwood dam. The original location of the cemetery where this stone was is not known to me. (Update - Located 2 Km +/- upriver from this cemetery)

Levina Louise JinsonJenson/Genson was born to Robert H and Mary Jinson. She married John DeMerchant Jr., March 1, 1815 at the British Military Garrison, York County, British Colony of New Brunswick (Modern day Connell, NB). She died after 1871.
