    As a contractor and builder, he later came to Casselton, North Dakota where he built many fine homes. He built a home for his bride, Rhoda Houghton, and brought her to the area after their marriage in Dansworth, Maine.

    Pioneer Contractor Was Resident of Casselton Since Early 8O's

    Funeral services were held Wednes-day afternoon in St. Stephen's Episcopal church for the late J.W.Port. Rev. H. R. Harrington of Fargo read the service. Mr. Port died Sunday evening, February the 26th, at the age of seventy-nine years. Surviving are his widow, two daughters, Mrs. Elmer Marshall of Absaraka and Laura Port of Casselton; four grand-children, Clyde Port of Fargo, Mar-gery, Kenneth and Allan Marshall of Absaraka. A son, Fred, died several years ago.
    John W. Port wad born July 23, 1849, in London England. At the age of seven years he came with his parents to New Brunswick, Canada to live. He was married in 1884 to Rhoda Houghton at Danforth, Me., bringing his bride to Casselton whore he had located four years previous. He came here with his brother, the late William S. Port.
    Mr. Port followed the occupation of contractor all during the many years of his residence in Casselton, the Portland hotel block, Midway Confectionery block, Baldwin flats and many dwellings being evidences of his craft.
    (Research):Mrs Clara Marshall (Clara Estelle Port) of Abasraka, ND, his daughter, was the informant for his death.

    Event Description: In some old family history it shows that he was born the Tower of London, London, England. The census reports do not support that claim.

    Notes:

    Due to the early death of her mother, she remained at home to care for the family. Her father raised sheep, and Rhoda spun the carded wool into yarn. Some of the yarn she knit into clothing and some was woven into cloth. Rhoda studied the dressmaking trade in Boston, Massachusetts. Rhoda also taught in the county school before moving to North Dakota,

    Through her girlhood, one of her duties was to help make clothing for her family. Her father raised sheep. They were sheared, the wool was worked and the winter months were spent carding wool, spinning yarn, dyeing it and making up the bolts of cloth into warm clothing. Later she went to Boston, Massachusetts and learned the dressmaking trade. She also was a teacher. She came to Casselton, North Dakota, as a bride. She married JOHN July 16, 1884 and came to North Dakota. RHODA died August 11, 1961 and was buried at Casselton, North Dakota
