Born in Drummond Parish, New Brunswick, he was the son of Murchie and Lavina DeMerchant. He was the third of seven children and was in his eightieth year. He is survived by his wife of fifty-six years, June (Parks), his daughters Cheryl Lafreniere (Marc), Hamilton, Ivy Biacsi (Michael), Australia and his number one son Rick (Silvana), Hamilton. Al had six grandchildren, Nicole, Suzanne and Alex Lafreniere, Aiden and Emilie Biacsi and Michael DeMerchant. Al was predeceased by his infant daughter Terri-Lynne, also by his brothers Wiley and sister-in-law Elsa, brother Angus, sisters Vera Baker and Myrtle Parker. He has one surviving sister Dorothy Smith of Guelph and one surviving brother Newman of New Brunswick. He had many nieces and nephews and his special cousins Sandra, Beverley and Doug. He was a strong Local 1005 supporter for the 38 years he spent at Stelco. He was an avid Euchre player and loved travel and camping.
