    • Obituary:

      Duane Dickinson
      September 20, 1927 – May 1, 2017

Duane (Dick) Carson Dickinson, 89, of Comox, BC, passed away on 1 May 2017 after a hard-fought battle with ALS.
Duane was born in Hartland, NB on 20 Sept 1927, the son of Frank Leroy Dickinson and Gladys Lillian Letson. Duane was a graduate of Hartland High School and of the Carlton County Vocational School in Woodstock, NB.

Duane married Sylvia (Betty) Elizabeth Stoneman on 16 Aug 1947 in Portage la Prairie, MB.

Captain Dickinson had a full career as a Canadian Armed Forces officer serving in the Air Force (commissioned from the ranks). Duane was one of the early Unix programmers that actually programmed defence systems for NORAD. He served in radar stations and NORAD bases across Canada and in the US until retirement and moving to Comox in 1978. He then served as a civilian member of the RCMP until his second retirement in 1993. He was a proud member of the Canadian Legion for more than 50 years.

He grew up on a large farm in Carleton County NB during the Great Depression, which taught him hard work, innovation and dedication. Make the most out of what you have. His technical understanding allowed him to build computers from components and become one of the most prolific 80-year-old family support techs around. Duane also enjoyed rock hounding, fishing, golfing (his hole-in-one was a highlight moment) and had a true passion for genealogy. He comes from a long line of United Empire Loyalists and traces back to passengers on the Mayflower.

Duane is survived by his spouse, Sylvia (Betty), his brother Robert (Bob) Dickinson, his sister-in-law Lilian Warke, his 4 children and their spouses: Janet (Ian) Hunter, Greg (Abbey) Dickinson, Karen (Ted) Benson, Gary (Dani) Dickinson, 11 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren and innumerable caring nieces and nephews, plus countless friends and acquaintances. He will be sorely missed and long remembered.

Duane is preceded in death by his parents Frank and Gladys and 10 siblings, Buster, Clarence, Wendell, Dorothy, Patricia, Douglas, Peter, Austin, Myrna, and Stephen.

As per Duane’s request, there will be no funeral service or wake.

The whole family wishes to thank Veterans Affairs Canada, Island Health, Red Cross, Comox Fire Department First Alert, B.C. Ambulance crews and St. Joseph’s Hospital staff, family and friends, for their compassion and assistance during this trying time.
