On Wednesday 31st ult., Walter WHITEHOUSE second s/o Joseph WHITEHOUSE of Knowlesville (Carleton Co.) while returning from the Miramichi (where he had been on a fishing and shooting excursion for two days) met with an untimely end. It appears that within a mile of his father's residence, he crossed from the road towards a fence for the purpose of speaking to one of his neighbours who was harvest work, and in so doing, he rested the butt of his gun on a log, holding the muzzle in his right hand, and in the act of stepping across the log, the gun slipped, and the hammer in coming in contact with the log, the gun exploded and lodged the contents in a slanting direction upwards in the right arm and shoulder, shattering the bone and otherwise inflicting a fearful wound. He was removed to his father's house and Dr. David WILEY was soon in attendance, when every remedy that could be obtained was used to alleviate the pain and comfort the poor sufferer, but sad to relate, he gradually sank and expired about six ( ) after the accident. The mortal remains of the deceased, age 24, were interred at the burial ground at Knowlesville on 2nd inst. Rev. Geo. T. Hartley gave a discourse. Mr. W. and family were formerly from Yarmouth, N.S. and have resided in Knowlesville about nine years.

The following particulars are given of a fatal occurrence at Glassville (Carleton Co.) a few days ago. Shortly after noon Friday 30th ult., Helen MacKENZIE d/o Murdock MacKENZIE, East Glassville, went to fire some piles in a fallow. Shortly after the piles were fairly underway, the fire began to spread rapidly over the old grass in the adjacent hayfield. The anxious girl immediately ran to the spot and endeavoured to tramp out the flames. Unfortunately they caught the skirt of her dress and in a momemt she was wrapped in a mantle of fire. Her father and his hired help Duncan McDIARMID beheld from a short distance the perilous condition of the unfortunate child and rushed to the rescue. Mr. McDiarmid seized the burning girl and sustained severe injuries in endeavoring to extinguish the flames. She was speedily moved to the house and every known remedy in the meantime resorted to. She lingered on for 17 hours of intense agony and then passed away. The deceased was 16 years of age.

April 11 - George CROWE, Glassville (Carleton Co.) died at an early hour this morn. The suddeness of his death led to the sending for coroner Port. The coroner took charge and assisted by Dr. Atkinson questioned the person who was present when Crowe died. It appears that Crowe went to Dr. WELSH and had a powder prepared for him. This he laid on the counter of the drug shop, with a bottle of medicines, while he got the change from his pocket. When he got ready to go, instead of the powder prepared for him, he took away a small packet of arsenic also on the counter. As Mr. Crowe was 45 years of age his making such a terrible mistake could hardly have been looked for and guarded against.

Through A.G. LINDSAY the sad intelligence reached us that on Wedenesday, Harry HOME s/o John HOME of Glassville (Carleton Co.), age 23, was drowned while bathing in Gillmor's mill pond, Esdraelon (Carleton Co.). Verdict of jury at inquest held by Coroner Welsh, accidental drowning.
**********************************************
Glassville (Carleton Co.) June 11 - On Wednesday 12th the sad intelligence was circulated that Harry HOME had met his death by drowning in the Esdraelon mill pond that day. It appears that he and Frederick THOMAS for whom with others he was working, went into the pond in an overheated state and the chilly water immediately struck Harry with heart paralysis or carmp and he sank in about 8 or 10 feet of water. Fred Thomas attempted to rescue him but in vain. This however was at last accomplisged by George GILLMOR who dived several times before he succeeded. When the deceased was brought to shore Fred MACLERINE was at once despatched for Dr. Welsh who was speedily on the ground and adopted all means of resuscitation but without effect. Squire Gillmor had driven of to Knowlesville for the father of the deceased, who was soon on the ground and made arrangements for the removal of the body to his home in Glassville, Perry FITZGERALD with his usual kindness volunteering his services for the sad duty. Owing to the hot weather the funeral was arranged for the next day. The body was taken to the parish church where the funera service was conducted by Rev. Fiske in the absence of Mr. Beairsto. After the benediction the casket lid, which bore the inscription, Henry Marchmont HOME drowned 12th June 1895 - aged 26 years' was partially opened and the people passed round the church taking a last fond look at the departed. Rev. Fiske officiated at the grave.

The deepest sorrow prevailed throughout our neighborhood Wednesday afternoon, 12th, when the sad news was circulated that Harry HOME had met his death by drowning in the Esdrealon mill pond. It appears that he and Frederick THOMAS, for whom with others he was working, went into the pond in an overheated state for a bath. The chilly water seems to have immediately struck the deceased with paralysis of the heart, or perhaps cramp and he at once sank to a depth of 8 or 10 feet. The body was recovered by George GILLMOR who dived several times before he succeeded. When the deceased was brought to shore, Frederick MacBRINE was at once despatched for Dr. Welch, who was speedily on the ground and adopted all the usual means for resuscitation, but without effect. The doctor believed the immediate cause of death was heart failure and being a coroner, at the request of A.G. LINDSAY (who with his father was on the ground), proceeded to hold an inquest and empannelled a jury. Meanwhile Squire Gillmor had driven off to Knowlesville for the father of the deceased, who on reaching the scene of the accident, made arrangements for the removal of the body to his home in Glassville, which Percy FITZGERALD carried out with his usual kindness. The funeral was arranged for the next day. Large crowds gathered to follow the remains to the Glassville Cemetery. After brief devotional execises at the house by Rev. Fiske, in the absence of Rev. Beairsto, the body was taken to the Parish Church. After benedictoion the casket lid, which bore the inscription, 'Henry Marchmont HOME, drowned 12th June '95, aged 27 years' was partially opened and the people passed round the church taking a last fond look of the departed. Rev. Fiske officated at the grave. The funeral arrangements were under John McIntosh.

R.E. STEPHENSON, Mrs. STEPHENSON and George A. STEPHENSON of Marinette, Wisconsin are visiting friends in this place. It is 17 years since Mr. Stephenson was in this, his native county.

***************************************************************

LONG ILLNESS ENDS IN DEATH ON SUNDAY
Death came Sunday morning at 9:30 to George Stephenson, 68, in the M&M hospital, after a prolonged and painful illness. For thirteen months, he had been confined in the hospital until three years ago, when he was removed to his home. He moved about with difficulty, using crutches.

Last March, he suffered a stroke of paralysis and his condition at that time was regarded as extremely critical and his death was momentarily expected. He rallied, however, and a month later was again removed to the M&M hospital. Last Thursday, he suffered another stroke and from then until the time of death, his condition was critical. He had resided here for forty-four years and for many years, had charge of the Seven Mile farm on the Menominee side of the river.

The survivors are the widow and the following children:
Scott [Charles] Stephenson of this city;
Mrs. J. Hambuechen of LaCrosse;
Mrs. George Innes,
Mrs. Edna Ford
and Mrs. Henry Bielefeld, all of Milwaukee;
brother Scott Stephenson of this city
and a sister Mrs. D.J. {Sarah} McKay all of this city.
He was a cousin of the late U.S. Senator Isaac Stephenson, who generously remembered him in his will.

The body was taken to L.D. Martin's undertaking establishment and this afternoon was removed to the family residence, 716 Jackson Street.
The funeral will be held from the home Tuesday afternoon at 3:30, the Rev. Kirby Chapman of the Baptist church, who ministered to him during his illness, officiating.
Burial will be made in Woodlawn cemetery
